My home looks out at the Spanish Colonial Revival style plaza in Ajo's historic center, one of the most beautiful plazas in N. America. Ajo is a small former copper mining town located in the heart of the Sonoran Desert and is entirely surrounded by public lands: Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge (Edward Abbey's former stomping grounds), the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation, BLM lands. You can literally be out in the wild within a couple minutes of this home in lush, quintessential saguaro-studded desert. BLM backroads lead into Cabeza Prieta, the nations 2nd largest wildlife refuge. Ajo is 40 miles north of the border, just 100 miles from Puerto Penasco at the head of the Sea of Cortez. Excursions abound.

Ajo is architecturally unique in that its historic heart is still intact and was modeled on the City Beautiful movement in 1914. Many of its homes and public buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Curley School has been refurbished into artist studios and apartments. Ajo's friendly residents are bound by love of their community and the surrounding desert.

This Spanish Colonial Revival style home was built in 1916, has a large comfortable "great room," and is beautifully furnished with Mexican furuniture. You can step out at night and see the Milky Way! (Ajo is minimally lit with an eye to night skies). Javelina often trot down the street at dusk and coyote are heard nightly. Ajo is one of only 65 towns in the country that have been designated National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat. Birds abound and are your morning wake-up call.

This 1400 sq/ft home has a spacious and well-appointed kitchen, an outdoor gas grill, and a Southwestern library of guidebooks, maps, natural history, and non-fiction books to assist you on your explorations. It is 110 miles from Phoenix, 130 from Tucson, a beautiful desert drive on a quiet two-lane with Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Tohono O'odham Cultural Center along the way. Many people have referred to Ajo as a well-kept secret.

You will never go wrong staying here! From the thoughtfulness of the hostess, Anita, to the beautiful decorations in this wonderful old house. Our stay was so relaxing and special. It was close to downtown activities, the kitchen was up to date and all appliances were in working order. This a great place to come and relax on the patio in the evening as the sun is going down. In the morning, we had coffee on the table in the front yard and visited with neighbors walking up and down the street.

Anita's Ajo home is a great value! The accommodations were super clean and comfortable, the location is quiet and private, and the all important air conditioner (temperatures were over 100 degrees) quietly kept the house very comfortable. There is also the most complete kitchen I've experienced in an AirBnB rental. This is a great base for adventures to Mexico's gulf resort town of Rocky Point and all the nearby wild desert land in Organ Pipe and Cabeza Prieta plus Ajo is growing into an artists' community with support from the restored Curly School.

We (5 adults) were in town for a remodel project on a family home, so this was not our first visit to Ajo. The location was perfect, just steps away from the historic, and picturesque plaza, shops, restaurants, and other sites. This home met all of our needs, it is spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed. The décor was a beautiful representation of the Sonoran Desert, with artwork from local artists, and handcrafted furnishings. Anita was very responsive prior to, during, and following our stay. She has an amazing library dedicated to information about the area, it is evident that she wants you to feel right at home, and to gain a true appreciation of Ajo and beyond. I definitely recommend, AND if available, I will stay here again!

We stayed 3 nights at Anita's lovely home. We walked to the Plaza for coffee and the Saturday Farmers Market. Her home was central to day trips, biking and hiking. We used her bikes to cruise around town. Great bed, slept well. I love her collection of maps and books.

Anita has a beautiful home in an ideal location for exploring this remote area. Great hiking at the Organ Pipe National Monument and getting completely away from civilization in the Cabeza Prieta Wilderness. A real decorator's sense with comfortable furnishings and curated like a southwestern artist's home. Hope to visit again soon!

Wonderful southwest decor in a historic neighborhood. Comfortable bed and furnishings. Well stocked kitchen w extras for cooking such as spices, good pans and dinnerware. Terrific grocery store in town. Excellent library. This was a very relaxing environment across from the town plaza. Definitely take a day trip to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Anita has a good maps and travel info to help explore the area. Good communication. No worries. We would stay here again. Plus she has bikes for riding around town.

I love the spacious, uncluttered landscapes of desert and tundra. I also have a cabin on the boundary of Denali National Park in Alaska and feel fortunate to live in two beautiful places which, though they seem opposites, are actually very similar in that they are both extreme environments, both deserts. I have traveled widely, deeply appreciating the people I've met along the way who've added immeasurable meaning and depth to my journeys by sharing their home ground with me. This is my opportunity to do the same.
I do speak some German--though not enough to check the "fluent" box!
