Der Wohnraum

Beautiful, comfortable, huge and fully self-contained studio within my mid-century Joshua Tree desert home, Casa Shangri La.

The property sits on 5 acres of land where you can experience infinity views of the desert and the mountains; and at night you can gaze up at a million twinkling stars that feel about an arms-length away from your own outdoor relaxation space with own patio and fire pit.

Experience peace, quiet, wildlife and endless starscape in style — on the grid but off the beaten track only 12 minutes from entrance to the national park

This is the perfect place to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower or any magical celestial event!

Casa Shangri La's studio itself is huge, and has its own private entrance and patio (and plenty of parking on the secure, gated property). It’s thoughtfully decorated in keeping with the mid-century architecture and features an extremely comfortable king-size bed (an extra bed can easily be added, if required), a writing desk, sofa, dining table and fireplace as well as refrigerator, hotplate, toaster oven and coffee-maker, cooking utensils, plates and everything you'll need in a kitchenette.

There’s also a fiendishly cool, private and totally unexpected bathroom with bath and shower. There are plenty of brand new sheets, blankets and towels and the studio has air-conditioning plus a heater for those chillier desert nights.

This is a magical property and very, very private . It’s the perfect escape from the big city and offers the kind of serenity that artists, writers and those simply stressed by the city will all appreciate. After 5 minutes absorbing the special energy here, one’s shoulders instantly relax, and after a few hours, one feels refreshed with a fully rebooted hard-drive. Stargaze from reclining chairs or escape desert heat in the outdoor 8 x 8 foot cowboy tub with infinity desert views.

You will witness wild animals in their native habitat. The cottontail rabbits, cactus wrens, lizards, desert tortoises, jackrabbits, coyotes, owls and roadrunners that make the desert their home make a visit to Casa ShangriLa all the more special. We care about the environment, and the property is fully solar poered

Casa Shangri La feels remote, but is only 11 minutes from Joshua Tree and is about 2 hours and 15 minutes from LA and 45 minutes east of Palm Springs. There are plenty of cool places to visit within a short drive, including the extraordinary Joshua Tree National Park which must be seen at least once in life to truly appreciate its majestic grandeur.

The amazing Integratron is about 20 minutes away, and if you’re looking for a cool night out, the famed Joshua Tree Saloon is 10 minutes from the property, and at 20 minutes away is Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown (which is worth visiting any time of the day or night for the incredible Wild West shows and ambience) which offers live shows by many cool bands, who sometimes just stop by and jam, especially during the Coachella Music Festival. I would happily cater for you if you would like me to get flowers, gifts or special treats for celebrations. I can also help you plan your stay, reserve tables at good places like Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, The 29 Palms Inn , Joshua Tree Saloon or even book your sound bath at the Integratron.

I’m really looking forward to meeting you and introducing you to the very considered and special retreat that is the studio at Casa Shangri La. Whether you’re just traveling through or looking to stay for a little bit longer, let’s talk – I know you’ll love it here. It’s peace, style,, comfort and serenity personified.

I am easy, but no loud parties or animals, as there are burrowing owls and road runners nesting on the property as well as desert squirrels, gophers, chipmunks and foxes about. Show the wild animals respect and keep distance from the nests and burrows, making sure to disturb the animals and birds as little as possible. Please keep noise level down after 10PM. ALWAYS turn air condition and lights off when leaving the house! Remember you are in a desert, so please be mindful about use of water, make sure that the fire pit is ALWAYS covered and NEVER used if the winds are higher than 5 mph (San Bernadino fire legislation). Please take your rubbish with you, and never, ever dispose of ANYTHING non-human apart from toilet paper in the loo (-i.e. no kitchen roll, facial wipes, q-tips, tampons or the like). Never dispose of cigarette buds in the desert, and put them out with water when you are done smoking outside (the desert is dry = fire hazard!) ANY sign of smoking inside the studio, will incur an extra 100 dollar cleaning fee, as well as leading to instant eviction with no right to any refund. No exceptions! This covers deep cleaning. I inspect textiles in the studio, and clean everything properly after each guest. For make up removal: Please use the cotton wool or pads provided. Unremovable stains means new textiles, and I will charge you as follows if stains does not come off in the wash: New sheet sets: $30. Bath towel: $5. Hand towel: $4, Wash cloth: $3. Robe: $15. For wine, tea and coffee stain on rugs, furniture and mattresses: The cost of cleaning or replacement by equivalent item. Any vandalism means that the guest cover replacement cost.
For your own protection, I recommend wearing closed toe shoes at all times in the desert, and use a torch at night (you'll find one on the premises). Thank you so much. :-)

Best abode in Joshua Tree, bar none!! Incredible sights, comfortable bed(s), plenty of space, and a freakin' cowboy tub...which was great for us PNW gals who aren't used to desert heat. Centrally located (just 10-15 min from the Institute of Mentalphysics/Desert Daze), but somehow totally removed/secluded. Tonelise was gracious, extremely accommodating (provided an air mattress for our friend for a nominal fee), and laid back to boot. I'll be returning for the festival next year, perhaps sooner!

This unique place that can be found off a dirt road and away from any city lights is worth the drive to Joshua Tree. We had the unique experience of seeing a burrowing owl, coyote and many birds. Tonelise is a wonderful hostess and has thought of everything plus things you might have forgotten to pack. I would highly recommend staying at her place.

Fantastic place with amazing decor in an incredible location. If you're looking to relax under the stars in Joshua Tree, this is the place to book. Tonelise is a wonderful, communicative host who clearly cares about ensuring her guests have a nice time. I've stayed in a lot of places with AirBnB and this was one of the best.

Tonelise's studio is truly a magical place: It is spacious and decorated beautifully in the midst of the desert, where you are surrounded by stars (you can see the milky way!) and a really relaxing calmness. The studio offers everything you need and much more, including a fridge with some nice surprises. The bed is super comfy and everything is very clean and well thought of. We simply loved it - as well as our host Tonelise, who really does everything to offer you an enjoyable stay including great recommendations for exploring the area. She is a really cool person and we would love to come back again and stay longer. Bonus: Great Wifi

Great little place. Nice and quiet, fun decor, and very close to the park / town. She definitely went the extra mile to make my stay pleasant: excellent communication, gave me suggestions of sites to see, gave a tour, and provided breakfast food. Best AirBNB experience I have had. Highly recommended!

Tonelise is a great super host and I wish more Airbnb hosts put together such a cute place and such a nice welcome package. She is smart, extreme in her own cool way as a transplant from Northern-Norway to the Californian Desert... this is a unique beautiful human being. RESPECT! and she has an exquisite taste for music. She loves the 50s and 60s and that gives her place a very cool retro style. She and I spoke a few times and on our last chat before saying goodbye we realized that we disagree on what ENTIRE HOME and PRIVATE ROOM means in Airbnb-terms. So this is how I see it: Before using it for Airbnb, this studio was just another room of the house. Probably a living room, so calling it an entire home led me to expect a certain level of privacy. I like to think I'm leaving feedback about my journey and feedback has both sides I guess... but reading other people's reviews I say that EVERYONE should read the description of the place and study the pictures because it's ALL THERE. And I told her... "I'm the impulsive type who sees three pictures, reads a couple of lines of description and if it all sounds good I go ahead and book it". However, as a visual artist myself and a writer, I can tell when a certain angle of the pictures and a certain wording in the description can feed your mind with a mental image and push you away from reading the fine print. AGAIN, I'm not complaining about it... I had a great time and for the price, I got a great place in the desert with a great host. Who else gives you mini bottles of Chardonnay, coffee ready to make, and fortune cookies over the pillow? Plus she will check with you. Again, she is a GREAT HOST. She even allowed me to use her private fridge because I took so much food with me, I couldn't fit it in the mini fridge provided. Thanks for trusting me Tonelise. I do feel like it wasn't comfortable for preparing meals and eating. You can do it, but the size of kitchenette and dinner table are miniatures. IT'S ALL IN THE AD AND PICTURES... so if you don't see that don't complain after. I'm gently letting you know. The bed was AMAZING!!! and chilling on the couch or laying on the huge rug was actually very nice. STARGAZING was also mesmerizing. She has the absolutely best views of the valley and she was incredibly cool when I mentioned that it'd be cool to grill.... because an hour later she showed up with a brand new BBQ. BOOM! 10 points for TONELISE! The smart use of the space and the installation of a bathroom separated from the rest of the room with wooden movable double doors is a smart design and looks pretty, but it doesn't give you much privacy. Let's say you need to...

Hi David. The space is like an apartment. It has it's own entrance, bathroom, living area, 4 private outdoor spaces, it's own BBQ and Outdoor tub and kitchenette. Everything is visible on the pictures. Look at them, and read the listing. Maybe you felt that it was a room in the house because you showed up with so much food, that I gave you an extra key and access to my own kitchen, fridge and freezer, which is a huge Maytag that you easily filled up. The kitchenette has a double hotplate, a fridge (with a freezer on top) and a toaster oven. The studio is 450 square feet. For under 100 a night. Like you say yourself: It's all in the listing and pictures. Maybe if you had looked and read, you would not have had different expectations.I gave you early check in, when you asked, as I'd like you to be able to come and relax without wasting time. You arrived late anyway. And it took me 3 hours to clean after you.

My name is Tonelise. I am from Northern Norway and moved to Joshua Tree after 20 years in London. Music, art, writing, magic and friendships have taken me around the world. I would not be the first person who fell in love with the desert, sold everything and hopped on a plane…
