When Natalie arrived 3 hours late with no explanation or apology I thought she was just rude. When a large dog (that she had described as small and well-behaved - no weight details) bounded out of her car Natalie began to occur for me as deceitful. She couldn't control her dog and confessed he didn't behave well with other dogs. An honest guest would have disclosed this problem before they arrived as I have two dogs.
When Natalie asked, "How long can I park illegally at Niagara Falls before I am towed because I don't want to pay for parking?" My worst suspicions about her lack of character were confirmed.
Although it was made clear before she arrived that dogs are not to be left at the church she asked if she and her friends could visit the Falls (12 minutes away) for a boat ride and return for the dog. I agreed. Without walking the exuberant young dog that had just spent 3-4 hours in a car, they crated him, left him in their room and did not return for another 7 hours. Looking back I believe it was Natalie's intention all along to disregard house rules, dump the dog and go have fun with her friends.
After 3 hours which was plenty of time to see the Falls and return, it was evident she wasn't coming back for the dog. I called Airbnb and they were terrific. Although all four members of Natalie's party had cell phones, Natalie could not be reached by Airbnb or me. Airbnb and I both had the decency to let Natalie know about our escalating concerns but we were unable to reach her. Airbnb was calling to let her know they had cancelled her reservation on my behalf and found her somewhere else to stay (details omitted from her over-dramatized synopsis). Originally, the authorities were for the dog. Confining a 6 month old dog for 10-11 hours is cruelty in my opinion. I was relieved and grateful the police arrived to manage the situation. Given her devious behavior and flagrant disregard for others I wasn't confident I could evict Natalie and her group on my own.
The sight of the magnificent 380 year old White Oak tree and the historic pioneer cemetery in the property adjacent to the church shouldn't have been too much of a shock to Natalie as there is a picture of the view from the bedrooms in the listing. She cites the pictures as one of the reasons why she chose this location.
I love being an Airbnb host and thoroughly enjoy accommodating and interacting with my guests. Every once in a while however, life throws you a Natalie.
