This completely updated 1912 Colonial Revival home is located on the top of "Judge's Hill" in historic Belhaven Heights. In the 1940's the home served as the Dutch Embassy. Queen Julianna (at the time Princess) of the Netherlands stayed in the house while visiting Jackson to review her Dutch Air Force troops training at Hawkins Field. The property has been locally known as "The Dutch Embassy" ever since. Vintage photographs of the royal visit and the original U.S. flag are on display within.
This home was featured on the HGTV program "If Walls Could Talk" when some of the discovered "secrets" from the home were discussed (Be sure to ask about these great stories if you stay!).
In addition to the dedicated historic preservation, this home has been updated to include every modern convenience. The kitchen boasts a Viking range, Professional Viking double oven, granite counter-tops, Hoshizaki ice-maker (sonic ice) and stainless appliances throughout.
The outdoor kitchen is available for entertaining with comfortable seating, beverage refrigerator, full refrigerator, television, sink, slate floor/counters and grill - all adjacent to the huge backyard.
The ground floor (hardwood oak throughout) also includes a game room with a vintage console arcade game and ping-pong table, laundry room, half-bath, breakfast room, bedroom with full bath, dining room, foyer, library, living room and afternoon porch. High ceilings, plantation shutters, period mouldings and original mantles all emphasize the historic preservation and grandeur.
A fantastic, tiered, staircase leads from the front foyer to the upstairs landing. The upstairs has four bedrooms with plantation shutters and two full bathrooms. The master bedroom contains a full king bed with "posture" mattress and a renovated bathroom. Heart-of-pine floors and high ceilings in the large bedrooms upstairs are original and comfortable beds and bedding offer a cozy stay for multiple guests.
The "jewel" is the sleeping porch from the home that remains an upstairs bedroom overlooking the yard and surrounded by eleven original windows with 264 individual panes of glass. The bead-board ceiling and design are truly unique and this room provides a delightful night of sleep with direct access to the back stairs, downstairs bedroom and kitchen.
4,500 square feet of indoor space, 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and a design that is open and flows for any entertaining make this property spacious and special. A private drive and gate, natural (bamboo) and enhanced fencing and open space provide a surprisingly intimate feel within the center of Historic Greater Belhaven (both Belhaven Heights and Belhaven are listed on the National Register of Historic Places). Historic charm, modern convenience and privacy within the center of the city make this home a special destination.
