This caboose will accommodate a couple or a small family. It has one bedroom with a double bed and a single daybed in the "great room". Small children could sleep in the cupola with sleeping bags. I have one in the drawers beneath the captain's bed in the bedroom. The caboose has been fully renovated, has a galley with stove, convection microwave, sink and small fridge. There is a full bath with shower. This is a work of love and packs a lot into a small 200 square foot space. The patio has a gas grill and a gas "hobo fire pit". Come and create memories in the "Valley of Virginia"
This vacation rental near Natural Bridge, VA came about several years ago when I acquired this old 1926 model caboose in bad condition. I decided it would be fun to try to restore it to some of it's former glory. Getting it to my site and placing it on ballast, ties and rails seemed to be a formidable task but was accomplished with the aid of a 100 ton crane and two low boy trucks. Several years of studying and work have resulted in a refined and special restoration. The exterior represents the car as it might have appeared in the mid 1930'S.
The interior has been refurbished with western red cedar walls, cherry floors, and the original curved wood ceiling. It has a bedroom, bath and galley. I have collected railroad memorabilia including signal lanterns, pictures of cabooses in action, marker lights and information about the history of cabooses and placed these in the car for your enjoyment.
Now for the particulars. In the bedroom there is a double captains bed, custom made by Ohio Amish craftsmen with a memory foam mattress and drawers underneath. The bath has a shower with a demand water heater. In the front galley area there is a two burner stove, sink, small fridge and a convection microwave. There is a coffee maker and kitchen and dining utensils as well as table ware. The cable TV and Bose radio are here as well. There is a small daybed in this area.
The caboose has a Mr. Slim heating and air conditioning system. There is a cupola which can be accessed by children via ladder steps on the wall of the hall.
Outside there is a large brick patio with curved rock wall for outside activities. Here you will find a gas "Hobo Fire" pit for cool evenings. I have placed a large stew pot for wood fires for cooking hot dogs or toasting marshmallows on the patio. There is a gas grill for cookouts.
