What a wonderful couple of nights we had at Bénédicte's beautiful home. We were greeted warmly, and introduced to the house by Bénédicte's husband, allowing us to get familiarised and ask any questions. Their home is immaculately clean and very well equipped. Everything is we…

We stayed a couple of weeks ago and after a long day at work we were confronted an angry husband who had a problem with us for leaving a light on in the house? We apologised and thought that would be it but it seamed he wanted to pick a fight about nothing. Screaming at us for no…

Thank you for your feedback – I am sorry if my husband’s intervention appeared confrontational and stern – he may sometimes sound a little abrupt if something has upset him, but he would never go as far as screaming at guests – his name is not Basil Fawlty! It is very unusual and rather unfortunate that your recent visit to our cottage turned out to be a mutual disappointment and I feel it necessary to clarify a few points. When guests are staying in The Lodge or The Studio Loft, they enjoy total privacy – however, we sometimes have to have to let ourselves in when they are out, in order to close roof windows left open (in case of a downpour) or to turn off forgotten lights. When my husband went in to turn off the lights during your stay, he noticed the state of the carpet in the dining area – covered in white dust and grit – and a number of other details which showed total disregard for using somebody else’s property - understandably, he felt a bit upset (after all, the cottage is part of our home) and consequently may have expressed his views in an over explicit manner. The reason for asking you to use the dishwasher is because dishes are cleaned more hygienically than by hand. You were presented with a high standard property, in immaculate condition – however, when I let you in to show you around on arrival, you seemed surprised when I took my shoes off and actually asked if I wanted you and your colleagues to take off your building site boots at the door – the answer was yes, definitely – but the state of the carpet after you had left demonstrated that you did not respect that rule of basic common courtesy and yet, I doubt that any of you would walk into your own or a friend’s house with dirty working boots on. Despite being a regrettable experience for both parties, we view it as a positive lesson for improving our handling of possible future situations that may be upsetting to us and I hope that the objective review I gave you (regardless of how sickened I felt on inspecting the cottage after your departure), urging other hosts to give you a chance, will encourage you to be more respectful of other people’s properties and hotels in the future. Best wishes. Bénédicte

I was born and lived in Geneva with my family until I met my English husband and moved to the UK nearly 30 years ago. We enjoy our property in Hampshire, both loving its beautiful location, the sense of space we get from our large garden surrounded by nature and the fact it's so…
