“ Eric J Louisville, Kentucky 334 Reviewed 2 weeks ago Best Italian Beef I've had When I go to Chicago, I gotta get an Italian beef sandwich. I used to engage in the standard Portillo's/Al's debate but then at trade show I asked a local what's really the best Italian beef and he told me about Johnnie's and he was not wrong. The beef sandwiches here are just superb, perfectly tender and flavorful on excellent bread and with great tasting peppers.”

“If you are looking for the best local sub, then forget about Subway, Jimmy John's or Pot Belly. Alpine Food Shop is where you want to spend your money. The flagship sandwich is the Alpine sub, but they have many others to choose from. If you're looking for the best Italian sausages in the area, look no further. They carry a small selection of Italian staples as well; antipasta's, salads, branded sauces, giardiniera and Italian bread. There are a few outstanding Chicago delis and Alpine stands tall amongst them.”

“Another local classic for over 70 years. Slow cooked bbq called out to you over the counter and eaten at indoor picnic tables. Affordable and a local gem.”

“Great subs, very nice people. This is a very "neighborhood" establishment. They are very friendly and your food comes fast. Get a "lunchbox" (chips and drink)with your sandwich. Its cash only- there is an atm in the place though. ”

“Elmwood Park welcomed tens of thousands of Italian immigrants in the 1910s-1940s. One of them was Angelo Caputo who opened his grocery store with his wife in 1958. Walk through the store and you will be sure to fill up your shopping cart with fruits, vegetables, cheese, olive oil, pasta and bread. Go to the deli counter and get yourself a quarter-pound of thinly sliced prosciutto and cheese. ”

“Kolatek's Bakery and Deli specializes in home style, fresh Polish food. From delicious confectioneries to smoked kielbasa sausage, everything here is great. Bring home fully cooked dinners for the family. A few choice items to name are the fine variety of homemade soups, the best damn fresh baked bread, a huge selection of smoked sausages and meats, plus the all-important pierogis. Because it's usually staffed with Polish deli hands and bakers, language can be a barrier. Simply do what we all do in Chicago's menagerie of culturally distinct delis and markets, when in doubt, point and grunt! Always works. ”
