“Myeong-dong The street of everything is init. Lotte Department Store at Euljiro. Many brand name shops and department stores line the streets and alleys. Common products for sale include clothes, shoes, and accessories. Unlike Namdaemun or Dongdaemun, many designer brands are sold in Myeong-dong.”

Place to shop
“Namdaemun Market is the largest traditional market in Korea with shops selling various goods. All products are sold at affordable prices and the stores in this area also function as wholesale markets. Most of the goods are made directly by the storeowners. Namdaemun Market is even open overnight, from 11:00pm to 4:00am, and is crowded with retailers from all over the country. When day breaks, the site of busy shoppers bustling around the market creates a unique scene that attracts tourists worldwide. Namdaemun Market sells a variety of clothes, glasses, kitchenware, toys, mountain gear, fishing equipment, stationery, fine arts, accessories, hats, carpets, flowers, ginseng, and imported goods.”

“SHINSEGAE MAIN AND NEW BUILDING [본점 본관, 신관] This department store is part of the Shinhwa group in Boys Over Flowers (꽃보다 남자) (KBS2, 2009), and is where Goo Jun-pyo (Lee Min-ho) and Geum Jan-di (Goo Hye-sun) go shopping. In Legend of the Blue Sea (푸른 바다의 전설) (SBS, 2016-17), Sim Chung (Gianna Jun) and Heo Joon-jae (Lee Min-ho) go shopping here – in company of Jo Nam-doo (Lee Hee-joon) in episode 9. They fake a rich real estate mogul and his fiancée from Dubai – part of the trio’s next scam. In episode 11, Chung comes back here to get a refund for the clothes bought previously, takes a tour on the in-store chairoplane [located in the Shinsegae Duty Free Shop [신세계면세점 명동점 현장] in the new building] and meets Joo-Jae’s half brother when she gets out of the store on the street below the store’s wings (well, it’s not a real coincidence). [Sidenote: The meta here is nice that Jun-pyo’s reincarnation, Joon-jae, comes back to ‘his’ store as a con artist, and how in both shows, the store belongs to his family.] In Fight For My Way/Third-Rate My Way (쌈 마이웨이) (KBS2, 2017), Choi Ae-ra (Kim Ji-won) works here as an employee. In episode 1 we see her with a former high school rival in Trinity Garden café, Shinsegae’s rooftop garden café – with a Jeff Koons sculpture in the background. STREET BETWEEN OLD AND NEW WING This is where the kiss between Ki Ha-myeong (Lee Jong-suk) and Choi In-ha (Park Shin-hye) happened in episode 8 of Pinocchio (2014-15). FOUNTAIN IN FRONT OF THE OLD WING In winter, the fountain right outside the old wing of Shinsegae Department Store is lighted up. In episode 9 of Goblin/Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 – 도깨비) (tvN, 2016-17), the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-wook) and Sunny (Yoo In-na) walk pass it and it builds the background of their conversation when they come to a stop in front of the Bank of Korea Money Museum [한국은행 화폐박물관] – which is situated right opposite of Shinsegae. In episode 12, both of them meet right in front of the fountain. Legend of the Blue Sea‘s Sim Chung and Joon-jae also stop in front of the fountain in episode 11 and 12. It is here that Joon-jae tells Sim Chung to wait a little for him (he wants to get the little octopus for her) but is arrested by the police before he can get back to her. * * * Shinsegae Department Store — Main Branch [신세계백화점 본점] is the main store of South Korean department store franchise Shinsegae, with its name literally translating to ‘New World’. Opened in 1930, this main branch is the oldest department store in South Korea. During the Japanese occupation it started out as a branch of Japanese department store franchise Mitsukoshi until it was taken over by the late founder of Samsung, Lee Byung-chull, in 1945 (which included also a name-change to ‘Donghwa Department Store’). It was again renamed in 1963 and carries its present name ‘Shinsegae’ since then (after it has been used as a post exchange by the American army for a couple of years). Now, it is run by Lee Byung-chull’s daughter Lee Myung-hee, but independent of Samsung Group from which it departed in the 1990s. The new building opened in 2005 and the old (or main) building has undergone remodeling in 2007. This main branch of Shinsegae is located in Seoul’s neighborhood Myeong-dong [명동] in the Jung District [Jung-gu/중구]. “Namsan Park is the largest park in Seoul and is home to many species of trees, plants, and animals. The park is well-known for its beautiful walking trails which allow visitors to see the local wildlife, such as its squirrels. The park covers a large area and features a number of tourist attractions including Baekbeom Square, the Namsan Cable Car and Namsan Seoul Tower, and statues of famous figures in Korean history. A number of events take place at the park and one of the biggest is the annual cherry blossom festival in April. The Cherry Blossom Path in Namsan Park is the longest trail of cherry trees anywhere in the city and is spectacular in full bloom. ”

“Joo Gi-bbeum (Song Ha-yoon) and Gong Ma-sung (Choi Jin-hyuk) pass by here on their date in episode 15 of Devilish Joy (마성의 기쁨) (MBN/Dramax, 2018). We see this cathedral multiple of times in Black Knight: The Man Who Guards Me (흑기사) (KBS2, 2017-18) (In fact every time somebody goes to Sharon Tailor): in episode 1, when Jung Hae-ra (Shin Se-kyung) was looking for an old tailor shop to get her dress in her ‘dream’, in episode 2, when Hae-ra and her friend were looking for Sharon’s (Seo Ji-hye) Boutique, in episode 3, when Hae-ra together with Moon Soo-ho (Kim Rae-won) are on their way to Sharon Tailor Shop and again it is again shown in episode 6. Lee Min-Chul (Lee Byung-Hun) fetches Kim Yun-Soo (Choi Ji-Woo) from her art academy and brings here in episode 22 of Beautiful Days (아름다운 날들) (SBS, 2001), prays for her good health and proposes to her with the ring she had left at airport. * * * Myeong-dong Cathedral [명동대성당] is located in Seoul’s neighborhood Myeong-dong [명동] in the Jung District [Jung-gu/중구]. “In the 1970s, an elevated road was built to connect the eastern and western sides around Seoul Station. However, the road was closed to road traffic due to safety issues. After this, rather than tearing down the existing structure, the road was transformed into Seoullo 7017, a new pedestrian walking experience. Seoullo 7017 gets its name from its years of new life, from being a traffic road in the 70s to a sky garden in 2017. The "17" also has a deeper meaning, with Seoullo 7017 being divided into 17 unique sections, and the road being located 17 meters above the ground. There are a variety of facilities along Seoullo 7017, including an information center, cafes, gardens, and stages. Seoullo 7017 itself is open all day, every day for visitors to enjoy at their leisure. If you would like a guided tour, be sure to sign up for the guided walking tour through the official Visit Seoul website”

“Sungnyemun, or the ‘Gate of Exalted Ceremonies’, is the south gate of the old fortress wall that was built to protect the capital (todays’ downtown Seoul) of Joseon. It is the largest of the old fortress gates still standing in Korea today, and was designated as the National Treasure No. 1 in 1962. The pavilionstyle wooden building forming the upper part of the gate was severely damaged by arson in February 2008, but it was returned to its original form after a full-scale restoration project that took five years to complete. The gate is often associated with the large complex of shopping facilities formed around it, including a traditional market which has steadily grown into a major tourist attraction. The area is always bustling with Korean and international shoppers seeking to purchase clothes, kitchen wares, domestic appliances and other commodities offered at reasonably low prices despite their good quality. Many of the shops doing business in the area run their own factories to maintain competitive pricing of the products they deal in. The Namdaemun Market currently houses over 9,300 stores and attracts over 500,000 shoppers a day. It has formed a huge international trading network of Korean merchants scattered around the world, spending and earning a large amount of money through imports and exports. ”

Cable Car
“Namsan Cable Car started its operation on May 12, 1962, and it has been loved by you for more than 50 years now, bo The cable car runs about 600 meters from Hoehyeon-dong platform to Yejang-dong platform on top of Namsan Mountain. K-blka runs at an average speed of 3.2 meters per second, so it takes about three minutes for one-way driving. The high-flying car on the ground is about 138 meters long, and you can enjoy the thrill of it. The cable car is operated simultaneously with the climb to the top of the main building, and the cable car has a capacity of 48 people and is equipped with facilities that can safely carry 92 people back and forth if the garden is full.”

“It is Korea's first example to reorganize an existing road into a pedestrian-centered road in Korea and introduce the concept of a green road, a horizontal space filled with sidewalks and driveways, and a green space for pedestrians. Pavement of feldspar (paving stone) on the road secured natural friendly clay blocks and pedestrian walks. Romance-filled Deoksugung Doldam-gil is a great place for lovers to walk, while Seoul Museum of Art and Seoul History Museum are perfect for cultural trails. Address :24, Sejong-daero 19-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul”
