“We camp here annually every summer with our extended family and our kids think summer is complete once we have that vacation! There are beaches for swimming, break walls for climbing, trails for running/biking/hiking, and places to visit and enjoy being on the shore of Lake Superior.”

“Head to Finger Point lookout for a great view of Lake Superior and its islands (5.5 km). Or take the loop trail to High Falls (2.5 km). You can sit right next to the falls, making it the coolest waterfall trail ever. (You can only sit next to the falls from the Canadian side.)”

“Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is a 700 acre state park with 159 modern campsites, a mini cabin, a camper cabin, six miles of hiking and biking trails, 1.5 miles of Lake Superior shoreline and 3 miles of Lake Fanny Hoe shoreline. The park contains the Fort Wilkins Historic Complex, which was once an active U.S. Army post built to keep the peace in Michigan’s Copper Country. Begun in 1844 and abandoned just two years later, the fort was briefly regarrisoned in the late 1860’s. Today, Fort Wilkins is a well-preserved example of mid-19th century army life on the northern frontier. www.michigan.gov/historicfortwilkins ”

“Want to see what the trees here would look like if left alone for, say, 600 years? This is a short but stunning hike through stands of white pine, cedar, and beech. The left loop is hillier.”

“Closest National Park, and an uncommonly remote one! Transport to the Island via the Ranger boat in Houghton at the Isle Royale national park visitor's office or the Isle Royale Queen in Copper Harbor. Adventurous and time-crunched guests may also book a flight via seaplane.”
