“Melbourne Gardens is a treasured part of cultural life and a valuable asset to the heritage rich city. With its stunning vistas, tranquil lakes and diverse plant collections, the Gardens are a place of continual discovery and delight. Enjoy the Aboriginal Heritage Walk, a Free Guided Walk, a ride on the Garden Explorer or Punting on the tranquil Ornamental Lake, all set against a beautiful backdrop and just moments from the city. These beautiful Gardens are home to amazing and diverse plant collections such as camellias, rainforest flora, succulents and cacti, roses, Californian species, herbs, perennials, cycads and plants from Southern China. Guilfoyle's Volcano offers visitors a fabulous precinct to explore. The Gardens are also a natural sanctuary for native wildlife. The Children's Garden has everything that children could want to help them discover the natural world, with plant tunnels that they can crawl through, rocks that they can climb and a bamboo forest in which they can hide. Visitors can unwind at one of two cafés, The Terrace or Jardin Tan. Or find botanical-inspired souvenirs and gifts at the Gardens Shop. During summer, the lawns come alive with outdoor cinema, theatre performances and exhibitions. Dogs are welcome inside the gardens but must be on a lead. The gardens are just an 18 minute walk away from Federation Square (5 mins by car or shuttle bus). www.rbg.vic.gov.au ”

“Dive into Port Phillip Bay under the watch of 82 distinctive bathing boxes, a row of uniformly proportioned wooden structures lining the foreshore at Brighton Beach. Built well over a century ago in response to very Victorian ideas of morality and seaside bathing, the bathing boxes remain almost unchanged. All retain classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs, though they also bear the hallmarks of individual licencees' artistic and colourful embellishments. Thanks to these distinctive decorations, the boxes turn the Brighton seaside into an immediately recognisable, iconic beachscape ”

“The 500 meter Frankston Pier is a local landmark of the suburb. Originally built in 1857, it has been both extended as well as repaired a number of times over the years. There is an artificial reef within casting distance of the pier that is home to a wide variety of fish. Near Frankston Pier is the arched pedestrian bridge over the mouth of Kananook Creek and a boardwalk that meanders along the beach. Public boat berthing is available on Frankston Pier for up to 48 hours at a time ”

“The 1000 Steps Walk is an institution for fitness enthusiasts across Melbourne. Making the 3km trek one of the most popular spots in the Dandenong Ranges. Experience filtered sunlight through the Tree Ferns and Manna Gum as you make your way up. There is always a range of native wildlife to enjoy along the way from birdlife to even the odd Lyrebird. Created in the early 1900s, the 1000 Steps Walk was originally made from the trunks of tree ferns laid along the wetter areas of the track to make the 290 metre ascent somewhat easier. These have been replaced by a combination of wooden steps and concrete section overtime to ensure that the track can cater for users year round in all weather. ”

“Millionaires Walk is great if you would like to see some amazing clifftop properties. Turn down Point King Rd Sorrento. Park at the end. Walk toward the beach and turn right rather than walking down to the beach. You will encounter some gates, you simply open them and walk through. The cliffs are crown land with public access, so you literally walk through the front gardens. Its a nice easy stroll.”

“This beautiful circuit walk is located in a deep gully surrounded by native bushland vegetation including Eucalyptus forests. This walk is moderately difficult with hills and formed track offering views of the picturesque OT Dam which has a boardwalk around it. The main OT dam was built in 1934 by local men employed the OT Cordial Company (later to become Kia Ora Cordials) using horse drawn scoops with stone being carted for the wall/bank. Two dams were constructed for teh cordial companies irrigation purposes; this larger one in the timber above the property and a second smaller dam on Boundary Road (near where Collins Road is located). The company made a cordial called OT with chillies which is where the name OT came from. The business closed in the early 1940's probably due to lack of manpower due to the war. The walk is well sign posted and borders the Hillview Quarry.
