“The most central of the city's public gardens, Cismigiu is a haven of lawns, trees, flowers and lakes. Often mistakenly referred to as a park, Cismigiu is actually a large garden, first designed and laid out in 1845 by the German landscape architect Carl Meyer, but not completed until 1860. More than 30,000 trees and plants were brought in from the Romanian mountains, while exotic plants were fetched from the botanical gardens in Vienna. Highlights of the 17-hectare garden include the Roman Garden, laid out in the style of ancient Rome, and including busts of Romania's most famous writers, the lake, which can be explored by rowing boat in summer or skated upon during the winter, and Ion Jalea's French Memorial in Carrara marble, which commemorates those French troops killed on Romanian territory during World War I. The park has a couple of cafes, refreshment kiosks and - in summer - terraces, as well as some good, large children's playgrounds. It can get very busy in good weather, but it is a lovely place to spend time.”

“One of the youngest park of Bucharest, good views, reasonably priced food stands which also sell beer, good for a quick visit before Parliament Palace. The land where is now Izvor Park have a tumultuous history, being destined by Ceausescu to another purpose. Here it was a demolition of a monastery and many houses, including an old palace, the Palace of State Archives. Ceausescu wanted to have here a Conference Room and Receptions, being very close to the People Palace - now the Parliament Palace. After the Revolution from 1989, after many purposes for this land, the General Town Hall of Bucharest decided to use this land for Izvor Park.”

“This is a great place where you can walk around. Among 40.000 different plants, you can take away yourself from a city life and feel the depth of the nature. It is quiet, big, with a large pond in the middle where you can feed the koi fish. In the summer there are movie screening festivals where you can bring your blanket and enjoy a nice evening, You also have lots of places where you can have a picnic, as there are many quiet places where you can retreat. You can visit the green house or the butterfly collection(see in advance when they are available to visit),or the botanical museum. For a quick getaway from the noisy city, this park is perfect.”

Dimitrie Leonida, The Astronomical Institute of Romanian Academy, The Roman Arenas”
