Hiking

The scenic pathway up Cowles Mountain is one of the most popular trails in San Diego County. The trailhead starts in the San Carlos neighborhood on the corner of Golfcrest Drive and Navajo Road and summits the highest point in the City of San Diego. Visitors will enjoy great views during the entire ascent but the summit offers 360-degree panoramic views of downtown San Diego, Mexico, North County and Orange County on a clear day.

The Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail is known for its well-maintained look, spectacular beauty and awesome views. As it is in the mountains east of San Diego, hikers should be aware of rattlesnakes and mountain lions around them. At the end of the hike, the Palomar Observatory is easily reached and visitors are welcome from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or 4 p.m. under Daylight Savings Time) year-round except Christmas Eve and Christmas.

The hike to the Devil’s Punchbowl might be one of the most dangerous in the county. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported in 2005 that about one person dies here each year. The allure lies at the trail’s destination. Surrounded by 75-foot high cliffs, a magnificent waterfall splashes into a pool known as the Devil’s Punch Bowl. Hikers have been known to dive from the cliffs into the pool, but because of shallow waters and slippery rocks, it is highly dangerous. Additionally, hikers (or swimmers, depending on what you’re more excited for) should bring plenty of water, as this hike is not for those out of shape.

The Iron Mountain Trail, like the Mount Woodson Trail, is located in Poway and is a good, standard hike. It starts off straight and slightly uphill, but soon curves upward into the eastern mountains. The trail is well maintained and the surrounding area is pockmarked with large boulders that are great for climbing. Hikers will feel like they are miles from civilization, so if you need to get out of the city or suburbs for a few hours, look no further than here.

In downtown San Diego is the Gaslamp Quarter National Historic District, an area of restored late-19th- and early 20th-century Victorian buildings. Today, the Gaslamp Quarter is a trendy area with shops, restaurants, and galleries, attracting locals and tourists. The area covers less than 20 blocks and runs approximately from Broadway to San Diego Bay. There are also a large number of high-end hotels that are popular with both tourists and business travelers due to the great location in the city. This area underwent restorations in the 1970s, which eventually led to it being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

San Diego's Seaport Village is a delightful place to stroll around and spend an afternoon. Located right on the waterfront, this area of unique shops and restaurants is one of the city's must-sees. Picnic tables, benches, and waterfront patios are sprinkled throughout the area, and weekends can be very busy. Outdoor performers take to the stage regularly in the afternoons, some of which can be quite eclectic. The area is easily accessible on foot from many of the nearby attractions including the USS Midway. Since there is limited and expensive parking at Seaport Village, it may be best to park a little distance away and enjoy the stroll along the waterfront to the site.

According to the Travel Channel's America's Most Haunted, the house is the number one most haunted house in the United States. Few houses in San Diego are as historically important as the Whaley House. In addition to being the Whaley Family home, it housed a granary, the County Court House, San Diego's first commercial theater, various businesses including Thomas Whaley's own general store, a ballroom, a billiard hall, school, and polling place. Significant events, such as the seizure of the court documents and records in 1871, and the suicide of Violet Whaley in 1885 profoundly affected Thomas and Anna Whaley. These events, as well as the hangings which occurred on the property before the house was constructed, have suffused the Whaley House with an air of mystery and added to its reputation as something more than just California State Historic Landmark #65.
