Great view of beautiful Tellico Lake with a view of the Smoky Mountains in the background (on a clear day). Easy walk to the fort which is located on a peninsula of Tellico Lake. No entry fee and simply a pretty place to take a walk. Kids and kids at heart can enjoy the replica of a fort that was built by the British. The park is 11 miles away (14 minutes) and is a easy drive, mostly on 4 lane US 411.

Bald River Falls is a good day trip and is easy to access. The falls are 80 feet high (some sources state 90-100) and you drive in front of them. The picture above is taken from the highway bridge. Parking is just beyond the bridge and then visitors walk back to view the falls from the bridge. More adventurous travelers take the short hike to the top of the falls which is easily marked at the end of the parking area. The drive to the falls follows Tellico River which some think is prettier than the Little River in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Take 4-lane US 411 to Madisonville, then 68 to Tellico Plains then follow the signs (turn past Hardee's). Soon after Tellico Plains the road (the beginning of the Cherohala Skyway) follows Tellico River then turn off on the River Road to Bald River Falls. About a 1/4 of a mile past the falls is Baby Falls and the river continues on with smaller falls and goes past a fishing camp and eventually a fishing hatchery (although the hatchery was closed the last time we were there). This area is part of the Cherokee National Forest. Restrooms are near Baby Falls but could be closed due to Covid-19.

Cades Cove is a must for anyone visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The loop drive is historical and scenic, a great place to view wildlife. Stop off at several places such as Cable Mill at the far end of the loop drive. The loop is one-way. Please be patient with other tourists who might want to drive slowly to soak in some details or take photos.

A good indoor place to visit during rainy days. Interactive displays for kids and adults while providing a history behind the Manhattan Project, which developed the A bomb during World War II.

Foothills Parkway is a great place for sunset photos on a clear day, or sunrise if you are an early bird. It goes on for miles and has two distinct and different sections - one between 129 at Chilhowee Lake and 321 near Townsend/Walland. The newest section connects with 321 in Wears Valley. The first section provides views of the Tennessee Valley to one side and higher mountains on the Tennessee/North Carolina border on the other side. The Eastern section is higher in elevation and provides outstanding views of the Smokies.
