Parks & Nature

Beautiful park in between Marchmont and the Old Town. Walk through the Meadows to get to the University buildings around George Square, or to George IV Bridge, which is the road leading to the Royal Mile. From the Meadows you can see Arthur's Seat to the East.

You can climb to the top of Arthur's Seat in a relatively short time (if you take the steepest route) - about 45 minutes. From the top the views around are spectacular - across the city, to Fife over the Firth of Forth (that is, to the County of Fife over the estuary river of Forth), and to the east out past Leith to sea. Following this climb I recommend lunch at the Salisbury Arms at 58 Dalkeith Road, particularly on a Sunday when they do a fine Sunday roast.

Beautiful red sandstone building in the New Town, with a fascinating painted frieze at the entrance containing many of the most important Scots from history, in addition to the large portrait collection.
