Hiking

- 1.5 mile easy hike along the Appalachian Trail. 360-degree views of Mount Mitchell and the Great Smoky Mountains. The road up does not require 4-wheel drive, but I wouldn't do the drive during icy conditions without it. GPS can give directions if you search Max Patch Short Loop. About a 35 min drive.

- the valley is one of the most remote places in the Smokey Mt Nat'l Park and a prominent place to see Elk. Elk are most active late Spring through late Fall. It has several hiking trails, streams for fishing, and preserved buildings from the early 1900’s. From 1-40: Take exit 20 towards Maggie Valley. After 1/2 mile, turn right on Cove Creek Road*. Go about 13 miles to the Cataloochee Valley. Cove Creek Road is a steep, ten-mile, narrow, curving mountain road. There is a three-mile unpaved section leading up and over Cove Creek Gap, and then winding down the other side of the mountain. When you again reach pavement, turn left and enjoy your easy descent into the valley.
