Sightseeing

The nearest greenway near 3901 Darby Road begins at Southern Boundaries Park and continues through Piney Wood Park where the Woodcroft swimming pool and tennis courts are located. The shortest way to get to the Third Fork Creek Trail is on a bike through a pathway in the private Surrey Green neighborhood on the other side of Hope Valley Road. Directions to access the trail: Go right on Darby to Westover and cross the street in front of Hope Valley Country Club onto Cornwall Road. Continue on Surrey Road until you get to Hope Valley Road. Cross Hope Valley Road and continue on Surrey around the pond. At the bottom of the pond near the intersection of Lytham Lane and Burney Court you’ll see a dirt path that connects to Third Fork Creek Trail. From 3901 Darby Road, the Third Fork Creek Trail is about 1.3 miles and you need to climb a very steep hill to get out of Hope Valley. But it’s worth it!

A very long trail great for biking, walking, running, and roller blading that starts from downtown Durham near the American Tobacco campus, travels across Fayetteville Road near North Carolina Central University, passes by Southpoint mall, and then continues through a tunnel of suburban woods all the way to Raleigh! You can access the ATT from 3901 Darby Road via the Third Fork Creek Greenway, but it’s far. You can also drive to one of the parking lots along the trail which is more convenient. The section of the trail past Southpoint mall is nearly unbroken by cross streets, whereas the section from downtown to the mall is broken up by cross streets meaning you have to stop every couple of blocks to look for passing cars.

Beautiful trails only minutes away with various access points. The Fews Ford access is the bigger park with more extensive trail system. A favorite there is Buckquarter Trail that runs along the river. The Cole Mill access also has a good number of trails. Two favorites are Bobbit’s Hole and Donnegan’s Trail. The Eno tends to get busy on the weekends but less so on week days.

Very cool hotel with spaces that house rotating exhibits of cutting edge contemporary art on three floors. Go in for dinner (expensive!) or a drink (also not cheap!) or just to take a look. It is really worth it.
