This is one of our absolute favourite places to eat, situated under the archway in the centre of Cartmel next door to L’Enclume . Nice beer garden out the back if fancying a drink and few nibbles in the sunshine. It can be popular so we advise booking in advance.

LA11 6PU. Takeaway breakfast and lunches. 15 min walk downhill from the back of our place. We love walking down on a Saturday morning!! Great big brekky barns and sandwiches and the most scrumptious cakes! Lindsay’s food and coffee sets you up for the day when exploring the lakes. If you ring in advance she can make you up picnic boxes which we thoroughly enjoyed at Cartmel races !

LA11 7PL. This is a great place to visit! And you don’t have to pay entry if just visiting cafe and estate where deer roam . You only pay to go in the house and their ornamental gardens. If driving it’s 5 mins from our place but on a dry day we recommend you park at Cartmel racecourse then literally walk straight through it and just keep going . Approx 20-30 min walk taking you via some woods and stunning views. We’ve done it many times! Check out their FB page for What’s On as they host festivals; markets and theatre events in the grounds. In the summer they have a pop up outside bar. Very dog friendly!!

Bowness-on-Windermere is popular so busy for much of the year. You can enjoy the lake for sailing and watersports ( kayaking/ paddle boarding) or just to relax within the town with plenty restaurants , cafes and shops. Well worth trying the boat tours or hiring a little electric boat. You can take your car on Windermere ferry to access the opposite side of the lake towards Coniston and Hawkeshead.

The walk around the lake is an easy and flat 3½ miles. Start in the village at the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop ( the home of gingerbread & not to be missed!) and walk east along Redbank Road, and then south towards Grasmere lake. The road meets the lake at the Faeryland Tea Garden, where you can sit and enjoy tea, coffee, ice cream and light snacks.

Hawkshead has been described as one of the prettiest villages in the Lake District, famous for its links with William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. A few miles up the road is Potter's home of Hill Top, owned by the National Trust. We like to meander the cobbled streets; grab a sandwich and sit up the hill next to the church and admire the views.
