Italian cookies are overshadowed (in a good way!) by what's behind the counter in the back of the store: Mexican "conchas", coffee cakes, Sfogliatella ("lobster tail"), and decent coffee. The local elders gather here in the morning, without fail.

Food is as basic as it gets (fried and in baskets), but the views are wide, gorgeous and democratic: you don't have to be a member to sit outside on the deck and watch progress on the New Tappan Zee Bridge at sunset. Plus, you can get a gin and tonic in a plastic cup. Cheap but a local scene.

Boy, does Tarrytown need a breakfast place that lives up to the reputation of Strawberry Place, located across the bridge in Nyack. It's worth the trip for the creative breakfast menu. Expect a wait on the weekends but if you go early, you'll be okay. Killer pancakes, experimental omelets, fruit-yogurt-granola concoctions. All in a warm, homey, bustling atmosphere on Nyack's main street.

Great little spot for burgers, wings, sliders, craft beer, salads, sandwiches. There's always a delicious vegetarian option in among the burgers and sandwiches. I love the fried goat cheese sliders, and their wings are killer (try the maple habanero!)

Hop off the North County Trailway to visit this cafe; sit on the porch with your coffee and relax. There's a diner-style restaurant just next door (The Patio) if you're looking for something more substantial. By bike from our house, it should take you about a half-hour to bike here -- it's a little over six miles away, on the paved trail.

Located just about a ten-minute walk from the house, the Tarrytown Lakes Park features two scenic walking/bike paths wrapping around the two reservoir lakes. It's an excellent place to jog, hike, photograph, or rent a kayak on the weekend. The bike path that leaves from the right-hand side of the lakes parking area connects to the North and South County Trailways, extensive paved bike routes to the north and down to the city.

Consistently voted the most scenic trail in the east. Take the Metro-North train from Tarrytown to the Breakneck Ridge station at Fishkill, then follow signs for the hike. Wear good shoes!
