Say bounjour or salut!
It's known that people in Montreal know the two languages - English and French. However, just as a courtesy you can always start by saying "bonjour or Salut!". It's a way to recognize the language, even if you don't know anything.
Verkehrsmittel
Metro and bixi are the best!
If you want to see the city through it's streets and people, make sure you take a bixi (bicycle city network) or metro. The combination is a good alternative.
There are many bike routes in Montreal if you are scared or driving along cars :)
