Local walks

Just down the street and across from the cafés and shops at Ängbyplan Metro you'll find this nice recreational area. A bit of forest, a small lake, some open fields... It's a great place for a stroll, for a run, or for a local picnic. If you walk eastward through the forest you'll end up at Åkeshovs Slott, an old country manor.

Swimming and beaches

Family friendly sandy beach on Lake Mälaren, just a 10-minute walk from the house. Well equipped with trash cans, toilets, a café/restaurant etc. There's even a water slide! Keep an eye on the kids when crossing the road to the beach. This place can get a bit crowded. If you don't have small kids, there are several places to swim and soak up the sun along the footpath leading south by the lake from Ängbybadet.

Sightseeing

Other guidebooks (and websites) will describe this royal castle and it's amazing park and grounds better than we can. Suffice to say that it's a UNESCO World Heritage site, absolutely beautiful, *and* about a 45-minute walk from the house. Walk south to the lake by Ängbybadet beach and follow the beautiful lakeside footpath from there until you get to the bridge. Walk across the bridge, and you'll see the castle. If you're not up for walking that far, it's also an easy drive or a simple bus journey - switch to the bus at metro Brommaplan, two stops towards the city.

For kids

Got kids? This is a brilliant place that caters to kids 0-12 or even a bit older, and it's just a 15-20 minute walk. There's a big, varied playground, a small "farm" featuring sheep and ponies, some sports courts (for basketball and more) and even a decent skateboard ramp. Björklunds Hage is in the middle of Norra Ängby, a neighborhood which definitely is worth a walk in itself.

Food scene

Apart from being the closest metro stop, Ängbyplan has three places worth noting: - Gateau. This bakery and café offers high quality, freshly baked bread every day. Plus a bunch of other goodies. - Astrids. As neighborhood restaurants go, this is the fancy choice. Nice and cozy, and also a proper restaurant as you would expect to find in the city. - The sushi/thai place. Works for the odd take-out, but otherwise a pretty generic Swedish local asian food place.
