This is a local favorite! Historic St. Mary's City is an outdoor museum of living history and fascinating archaeology on the site of Maryland's first capital. The living history exhibits are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Visitors Center and Shop at Farthings are open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. An historic replica village complete with a few buildings, a replica 17th century boat, church, and statehouse to name a few. Take time to talk to the people in period costume who will explain what life was like - they're a treasure of information! Go at your own pace and spend as long as you like. Within walking distance from the house if you like a short hike (a little more than a mile away).

During the Civil War Era, Point Lookout was first a hospital for wounded Union soldiers and then a Civil War prison camp for captured Confederate soldiers. In researching my ancestry I discovered that a relative of mine was held prisoner in the Civil War prison camp. The Point Lookout Lighthouse is considered the oldest of its type in the United States. It is said to be one of the most haunted in America. Call or visit the website for season and hours of operation.

A great place to visit! The Navy’s aircraft and flight systems have been tested and evaluated at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station since WWII. There is a Museum, outdoor Aircraft Park and Gift Shop which has a large collection of aviation-themed merchandise if you're looking to pickup gifts to take home. You can see and learn about aviation research, by viewing crew system artifacts, ejection seats, radars, and test instrumentation. In the outdoor aircraft park you can see and touch naval aircraft tested at Pax River. Call or visit the website for seasonal hours of operation.

A must see! Historic Sotterley Plantation is a National Historic Landmark dating back to the turn of the 18th century and is one of the oldest museums of its kind in the United States. Located on on the beautiful Patuxent River, you can spend the day hiking nature trails, strolling thru beautiful gardens, and touring an old Manor House and a real slave cabin. A must is the onsite guided tour of the home which details the long history of the property. I recommend seeing the video history of the plantation before touring the Manor House. It provides context and history of the house and grounds. The visitor center where you purchase tickets ($10 for house tour) has a gift shop too. Guided tour season runs May 1 - Oct. 31, Wednesdays thru Sundays. Museum Store is open during tour season. Group Tours available. It does not cost a thing to visit for a walk in its very pleasant surroundings. Featured in "The 25 Best Historic Homes in America" by Traditional Home Magazine.

Very interesting and something you may not know is that Dr. Mudd introduced John Wilkes Booth to John Surratt and was later convicted of conspiring to kill President Lincoln in June 1865. Dr. Mudd was the southern Maryland doctor who set the leg of John Wilkes Booth the morning after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. I have enjoyed their monthly presentations (free to the public) if you are interested in learning more in-depth details of the life of Dr. Mudd. The Mudd House Museum is open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for guided tours. The last tour begins at 3:30 p.m. Tours of the House are $7 for adults, $2 for children aged 6-11, and children 5 and under are free.
