Food scene

This calm oasis on the main strip of Esperanza serves possibly the best food on the island. The prices are higher than most, but well worth it. Great local seafood, fantastic cocktails and inventive, flavorful cooking make this a standout. Vegetarian dishes are standouts as well.

Fun, casual place on the west side of the island perfect for the whole family. The menu runs the gamut from fabulous sushi to bbq ribs! The side dishes are plentiful and yummy and their spicy margaritas are stellar.

This is our go-to restaurant on the island. Less than a ten minute drive from Las Piedras, this cozy, casual restaurant feels like home from the very first visit. The tacos are inventive and delicious and their seafood dishes are perennial favorites, but don't miss their carnitas either! Tuesdays are tacos-only and they aren't open on weekends, so be sure to plan your reservation accordingly! If you're checking a bag on the way back- be sure to pick up some of their homemade hot sauces.

Open Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Best place for fresh produce in addition to the couple who sell fruit and vegetables almost every day the corner of Calle Munoz Rivera and Calle Antonio Mellado (it's the main intersection when you're leaving Isabel II for the beaches, or anywhere else)

This entry is just about the fish market, just to the east of the ferry pier, but not easy to spot until you're close. Fresh lobster and conch almost every day plus whatever else the local fishermen caught that day. (Cash Only)

Great, authentic Vieques cuisine. Not as fancy as El Quenepo so good for the whole family.

GREAT breakfast & brunch place. (Avocado toast and breakfast burritos are to die for) also amazing coffee, smoothies and cocktails. Additionally: fantastic source for hard to find items like ripe fruit, organic bread, cracker, sandwiches, etc. Very close by, too.

A beautiful modern concrete hotel with a young, lively crowd. The food and drinks are good, but maybe not as good as our other Esperanza choices. You're coming here for the scene, the music, the views, the atmosphere.

Touring the world's brightest bioluminescent bay while you're on Vieques is a must! Jax's tour guides are fun, knowledgeable locals and their boats have glass bottoms to fully experience the spellbinding light show in the water. The tours book up quickly so reserve as soon as you can. It's a once in a lifetime experience.

The best snorkeling spot on the island (aside from Las Piedras' front "yard"!) ;-)

It's a little bit of a walk through mostly picturesque jungle-like setting to this beautiful black sand beach. Great for swimming and its dramatic sand and bluffs, it gets crowded, so plan to visit early or in the later afternoon for a more serene visit.

This is the A+ typical tropical island beach. This long, flat, soft sandy beach close to Esperanza is punctuated with plenty of gorgeous palm trees and there are frequently vendors offering fresh coconuts (with or without rum) ;-)

These series of beaches (La Chiva) are great places to decamp for a morning or afternoon of picnicking (go early to score a spot with a covered picnic table), swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding and shell finding. There are great beaches for little kids too, along the bay. And some of the most breathtaking views you will ever experience.

Neighborhoods

There's a lively scene along the main drag with beautiful views of the ocean and the many fishing boats anchored along the shore. Local artists sell their wares and a variety of restaurants (good and not so good) line the street. You may hear local musicians playing at Duffy's or Bananas and do have a look at the modern exterior of the El Blok hotel. (Their restaurant is sometimes quiet good as well)

The oldest neighborhood in Vieques (built by Spanish colonists in 1820's) is also the closest to Las Piedras. It's the location of most municipal buildings, the post office, the ice cream place, the Fortress, the two best breakfast and brunch places on the island : Buen Provecho and Rising Roost as well as the Hutchinson Wielgus Art Gallery- a must-see.

Yoga

The yoga pavilion at the Hix house is the stuff of both aesthetic and yogic dream with shaded, plentiful breezes, tropical birds and plants and some seriously good yoga instruction! With the W hotel closed, this is also the only year-round yoga class I know of, but it would earn stellar reviews even if there were plenty. Note: BRING CASH! The instructors are paid by the guests / students directly- and don't accept credit cards.

Local and international artwork with a subtle (not cheesy) tropical vibe. Their 12x12 artwork auction every March benefitting the Vieques Humane Society is one of the best annual events on the island.
