The hall was mostly constructed in the 16th century, incorporating parts of a medieval building held by the abbots of Bury St Edmunds which had been in use since before 1065.

Some great little shops here and nice pubs to eat in. Try the Cock & Bell or The Bull.

Food scene

Set overlooking the Water Meadows, this is a gorgeous hotel with a roof top setting for those lovely hot summer nights. Dogs are welcome and the scenery is amazing. Great food.

Its museum displays artefacts up to 2,500 years old. Also in the park is Hollytrees Museum, a Georgian townhouse displaying 3 centuries of clothing, clocks and decorative arts. Nearby, in the Dutch Quarter, are the remains of a Roman theatre. Great shopping here too.
