To the east the crying prairie winds, along with the centuries of rain have formed deep gorges and sharp lunar-like spires have given a strange beauty to this desolate land called the Badlands. It was the French-Canadian trappers in search of beaver to the west who were the first men to record their impression of the badlands. They called the region les manuvaises terres a traverser (bad land to travel across). Once home to prehistoric birds, marine life, carnivores, and herbivores, the Badlands National Park is a paleontologist's field dream. A vacation to South Dakota is not complete without a tour of the Badlands. Seldom Inn is located only 55 minutes away from the Badlands. Visit early morning when temperatures are cool. Restaurant in Wall outside of the park is Wall Drug.

When he started work on the monument in 1949 he was almost 40 years old and had only $174 left to his name. Equipped with only a sledge hammer, a single-jack drill bit and a box of dynamite, Korczak went to work creating his 563 x 641 foot three dimension sculpture. Unlike Mt. Rushmore, which used a substantial crew and federal funding it was just Korczak. The epic monument is located 40 minutes from Seldom Inn.
