Sightseeing

Walking Tracks – back (Ocean) beach There are walking tracks throughout the Pt. Nepean National Park that follow the coastline from Cape Schanck to Portsea, and the National Park is within 200m of the house. (1) ‘Jumping’ rock at Bridgewater Bay - about 7-10 minutes’ walk (about 300m) Turn right out of the drive and walk around the corner and turn left at Hilltop Avn., and then left again at Ritchie Avn. Follow the sand road around the corner to just past No.22 Ritchie Avn., where you will see parking on the right for about 2 cars. This is the start of a track that will take you to Bridgewater Bay. Follow this track and turn left at the ‘T’ intersection after about 50m which will take you down to the coast. Turn right at the coastal track by the sea and after about 100m, Bridgewater Bay is on your left (an aerial shot of this track is on the website for the property or check out the aerial photo in the Games room). (2) Coastal view from highest point on the dunes - about 5 minutes’ walk Follow directions to Ritchie Avn. above, and follow the sand road until you get to No.10 Ritchie Avn. About 10-15m after No.10, on the right just before a bollard, is an unmarked track that will take you over the dunes. This track is only used by locals and is our favourite track – it will take you to the highest point on the dunes after about 50m for superb views from Cape Schanck all the way to Lorne (on a clear day)! Take a picnic lunch and just enjoy the view – complete solitude. Note: You can get down to the coastal track from here where you see evidence of paths. Rock pools/back (Ocean) beach There is a small beach at ‘Jumping Rock’, Bridgewater Bay, but otherwise the back beach consists of many rock pools where you can swim or snorkel in safety, provided you go at low tide. ‘Jumping Rock’ has a large rock pool with safe swimming, at low tide. Check Port Phillip Heads low tide times online, or look at the Tide clock (for the back beaches) on the kitchen wall. The nearest patrolled beach is Sorrento back beach * Only swim between the flags *. Fowlers Beach (Kirwood Rd) - about 10 minutes’ walk (after parking) Drive around to Kirwood Rd. (first left after St. Johns Wood Rd.) and you will find a small parking area at the end of Kirwood Rd. From the car park, take the track that leads into the National Park (at the telegraph pole), turning right. Follow the track around to the left after about 15m (just past the wooden post), and after approx. 75m turn right at the ‘T’ intersection. Follow this track for about 100m to the next intersection/cross-paths (about 15m past some ‘up’ steps) and turn left. Scramble up a sand dune on the marked track until you get to the top. Turn right towards the back beach and ocean. Follow the track down to the back beach. When you reach the back beach, you will see a large rock pool down on the back beach, a little to the left from your elevated position. Swim in the rock pool, at low tide. Remember: Never swim off the back beach, except at patrolled areas (rock pools at low tide only) Never swim alone Bay Beaches Tideways/Sullivan Bay – Safe swimming. Nice sandy beach with shallow water for swimming, located between Hughes Rd. and the Sorrento Sailing Club. Turn right into a small carpark, about 50m past Westmore Ave. – generally not too busy. If that is full, there is parking on the main road (opposite carpark), or in Westmore Ave. On the beach turn right, and walk 50m to one of the small jetties for privacy. Expensive houses come right down to the sand. Ocean (back) Beaches Sorrento back beach – swim in patrolled areas, only between the flags. Large car park but can get full around mid-day. Arrive early. Large man-made rock pool with rock for diving, at right hand end (from car park). Café at the car park. Portsea back beach – swim in patrolled areas, only between the flags. Large car park but can get full around mid-day. Arrive early. Long, pristine beach but with dangerous rips. Ice cream shop in SLSC Club area. Gunnamatta back beach – swim in patrolled areas, only between the flags. Large car park but usually always parking available. Long stretch of beach with consistently high swells and rocky reefs, and rips. Dangerous for swimming, so swim between the flags. Small shop in summer.
