This killer hiking and bicycle trail system is a short 20 minute drive from downtown to the south and situated right at the base of our beautiful Big Horn Mountains. The upper section is definitely steeper and more wooded and the lower more open and easier going.

About ten minutes from the house is Blacktooh Park that connects into the Hidden Hoot Trail system. One of my favorite bicycle paths. Not much for shade and a little difficult to find if you don't watch for the signage(ask me how I know) but super rewarding. Towards the top you can connect over to the Solider Ridge trail system via a trail called the Link that is also lots of fun.

Super friendly and easy trail system to the west of the house. Locals frequent this easy trail system and are rewarded at the end with a expansive and unobstructed view of the Big Horns.

North of town about 30 or minutes is a large body of water with lots of shoreline and spots to hangout for the day. The water is typically cooler being as its fed from the runoff of the mountains but its a easy way to get some water time in. Little to no cell service but there is a marina store that has most things you need and also serves some food.

One of our favorites places to waste a day. Whether it be paddle boarding the calm mountain lake, hiking around the area or just hanging out close to the shore and enjoying the day, this is our go to spot. Make sure to get there early as the grilling and table spots fill up quick especially on weekends. Zero cell service but there are a few places up the road like Bear Lodge that has food and decent wifi.

South of Sheridan there is a little town called Big Horn and a few miles beyond that is the Brinton Art Museum. Stunning views and a solid little cafe make it a easy place to enjoy some time away from town and soak up some gorgeous art.

Another one of our favorite bodies of water is located deep in the mountains but is a easy hour or so drive from town. The road up is rocky(but doable for even a Prius, Ive witnessed it) and you'll lack cell service but the views are stunning, the water is colder and the temps more agreeable in the heat of the summer than at the lower elevations. Pack a lunch and your recreation stuff as there isn't much up there as far as services and amenities for the public.

A few minutes walk to the west lands you in Sheridan's most traveled park. In the summer there's a cool little local ice cream stand that the locals gravitate towards and a community pool thats great to spend a afternoon with the kiddos. There is a small wildlife refuge attached to it to with a few bison and elk that roam the area(fenced off and safe for viewing).

Our house back-up against this beautifully kept park. Sheridan has invested a ton of money into the walk/biking paths that wind through town and this is the closest access to the them. The library sits on one side and the YMCA on the other, I believe the Y has day passes.

Head for Dayton and straight up the mountain and on your right is Steamboat Point. The trail is pretty steep but offers killer views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. Sunrise on Steamboat isn't to be missed.

Roughly four miles up and back, the views are killer. On the harder side of a hike compared to a lot of other close by options but its worth it once you hit the top. Figures a few hours up and a one or so back. Definitely want something 4wd as the "road" can be a little gnarly at times.

Try this 4.7-mile out-and-back trail near Dayton, Wyoming. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 9 min to complete. This is a popular trail for fishing, hiking, and mountain biking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are April through September. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

Grocery

In my opinion, Sheridans best market but at a high price point. They have everything you could want from a gourmet grocer and their butcher block has the best cuts in town and all from local providers.

A local favorite for a butcher that you'll see listed on a many menus around Sheridan. The Legerskis have been in the business for multiple generations and its easy to see why. They're literally right around the corner, it'll take you longer to find a parking spot in-front of their busy downtown location than it will to walk. Their fresh hot dogs are THE BEST.

Looking for the best cheese, charcuterie and curated wine selection? This place will be your jam. I can spend lots of time(and money) here. They have great recipe ideas and can guide you through everything you'll need to make a meal at the house for the night that you won't forget.

Wyoming is unique in its approach to raw and locally grown food in that its possible to buy local producers products as long as they're for sale at a Farmers Market. Cross E's year around indoor farmers market offers everything like local meat options, freshly grown vegetables, locally roasted coffee and even raw milk. If you never had a truly farm fresh egg(like laid that morning), this is your place.

City/town information

About 30 minutes to the South is Buffalo at the intersection of two interstates. A fun little town with a cool older downtown. If you've watched the television show Longmire, The Busy Bee Cafe is located here and a favorite. Some unique food options that are worth the drive including the what might be the best steak in driving distance at Winchesters. Make sure you have reservations if you want to attend though, they're always slammed.

South of town is a wide spot in the road called Big Horn. We personally live close to here so we're frequents at the two eateries that exist there and big advocates of people trying them out. Big Horn Mercantile makes the best pizza and calzones in the area in my opinion. They're always slammed and packed so expect waits whether its call in for take out or eating in. Also is the Bozeman Stable saloon. They're closed Wednesdays but open otherwise and serve some great food options.
