What makes Valentia Island so unique, apart from its outstanding natural beauty on the Skellig Ring, is its history in transatlantic communication. Valentia was the eastern terminal of the first commercially viable transatlantic telegraph cable. The first attempt in 1857 to land a cable from Ballycarbery Strand on the mainland just east of Valentia Island ended in disappointment. Subsequent failures of cables landed at Knightstown in 1858 and Foilhommerum Bay in 1865 finally resulted in commercially viable transatlantic telegraph communications from Foilhommerum Bay in 1866. Transatlantic telegraph cables operated from Valentia Island for one hundred years until Western Union International terminated its cable operations in 1966. Prior to the transatlantic telegraph, American longitude measurements had a 2800 foot uncertainty with respect to European longitudes. Because of the importance of accurate longitudes to safe navigation, the U.S. Coast Survey mounted a longitude expedition in 1866 to link longitudes in the United States accurately to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Dr. Benjamin A. Gould, Jr. and his partner Mr. A. T. Mosman reached Valentia on 2 October 1866. They built a temporary longitude observatory immediately adjacent to the Foilhommerum Cable Station to facilitate synchronized longitude observations with Heart's Content, Newfoundland. After many rainy and cloudy days, the first transatlantic longitude signals were exchanged between Foilhommerum and Hearts's Content on October 24, 1866. All of Valentia is magical, get the car ferry from Reenard outside Cahersiveen and land into the main town of Knightstown, drive across the island to the other side and drive over the bridge connecting the island to the colourful picturesque village of Portmagee back on the main land.

Covid Update - boats not landing on Skelligs. Check directly with operators. Worth booking a boat trip from Portmagee or Ballinskelligs Pier to view this world heritage site and location of Star Wars films. If you book a drop off trip, worth noting that the steps are steep and there are no facilities - not a suitable trip for children or anyone with mobility issues. You can instead do a boat trip out and around, which do not land but you get to see the islands up close.

Spectacular scenery from multiple vantage points with many information panels to educate the family on the history of the area, the flora and fauna, and the key figures born locally. Well worth the price (6 euro for a car in summer of 2020) and the walk on a clear day for the fabulous views out to the Atlantic and in to the Caherciveen coastline.

Well worth dropping into this hotel and its lovely cosy Fishermen's Bar to see the place Charlie Chaplin stayed when holidaying in Waterville with his Irish wife Oonagh and their children. Many famous golfers have stayed here too - you might bump into one as Waterville is a renowned golf destination with both a links and golf course either end of the town.

A nice long walk from the house, well worth going to view this very unique artists village perched on the very south west of Ireland, the very edge of Europe, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Absolutely amazing discovery of pre-historic tetrapod trackway on Valentia Island. Food for vivid imaginations and worth seeing by all dinosaur lovers and anthropologists. In 1993, an undergraduate geology student discovered fossilised tetrapod trackways, footprints in mud preserved in Devonian rocks on the north coast of the island. About 385 million years ago, a primitive vertebrate passed along a muddy shoreline in the equatorial swampland that is now southwestern Ireland and left prints as if in wet concrete. The prints were preserved by silt overlying them, and were converted to rock over the ages. The Valentia Island trackways are among the oldest signs of vertebrate life on land and have been studied extensively by the paleontologist Dr Stössel. https://www.fossilguy.com/topics/tetrapod-trackway/index.htm

The Stone forts of Cahergal & Leacanabuaile are located in an area know as "over the water" by the locals in Cahirciveen. Find the Old Barracks in Cahirciveen, located down by the waters edge, with the barracks on your right hand side continue over the bridge immediately ahead, at the next crossroads take a left and follow the signposts for the forts, they are located approximately two miles on the left (head in the direction of Ballycarbery castle). Also well worth visiting in this area is Ballycarbery Castle. Cahergal Stone Fort A few hundred meters on from Ballycarbery Castle is the stone fort of Cahergal, built around 600AD. It is well worth a visit. The current structure has undergone some reconstruction and while the purist may say it is too “clean and pure” it is an impressive site. With walls approx 6 m high and some 3 m thick this dry stone wall fort is one of the best examples of an early medieval stone forts to be found on the ring of Kerry. Leacanabuaile Stone Fort The stone fort of Leacanabuaile Stone Fort on the hillside. It is a fine, partly-reconstructed stone fort on a massive rock foundation, it's stone walls enclosing an almost circular area 70 feet in diameter. Protected on three sides by steep grassy slopes, the entrance is on the eastern side. The walls, mostly 10 feet thick and with irregular steps leading up on the inside, contain the remnants of a square dwelling house built on top of earlier circular ones; another clochan on the western side has a cavity leading to a long souterrain. Excavation produced Iron and Bronze Age objects, suggesting the existence of an early Christian farming community.

Charlie's Restaurant at Butler Arms Hotel, Waterville - recommended by our guests. "Serving breakfast and dinner daily, Charlie's restaurant serves exquisite food from a varied menu, specialising in local seafood and complemented by an excellent wine list. Fresh Oysters, Lobster and Mussels are a must for the discerning diner as well as our local meat dishes which include Roast Rack of Kerry Lamb and Silver Spring ½ Duckling.
