Food scene

If you live in Oak Ridge you will be asked (even in China...true story) if you eat at Big Ed's. The pizza is fabulous and a favorite of locals. It is definitely a landmark restaurant.

Calhoun's is a chain restaurant specializing in southern style BBQ. Their ribs are one of the repeat customers favorites. Be sure to make a reservation for the East Patio (with a view of the old bridge). Go early in the day and enjoy the beautiful riverside view.

Delicious southern cooking! Close by. Be sure to check out the old photos on the wall. When I moved to Oak Ridge, the building was the original pharmacy for the Manhattan Project.

This is one of those "hidden gems". Not fancy and best for pick up and picnic or take home. Authentic food that is always fresh and delicious. They are the first booth to sell out at all local festivals. Try anything on the menu-you won't be disappointed. I pre-order so pick up and go is fast.

This is a huge museum housed in an old school. Carve out some time if you have young children. When my kids were young we would pack a lunch and stay for the entire day. There is a playground on the premises. Check out their events page as they offer classes and special events.

Historic Jackson Square

Jackson Square was "the hub" during the Manhattan Project. Oak Ridge Playhouse is on one end and has been in operation since 1943. There are several nice local shops. Grab lunch or an ice cream at Razzleberries and try to guess the number of pigs. Be sure to look at the small garden that includes some native species. On the lower level is the Soup Kitchen.
Verkehrsmittel

Transportation

Uber - Usually available during the day but may not be after 9:00PM. Taxi Service - Google as they change. Host - For a small fee (gas money basically), I am happy to drive you around. If I am already headed to the store or to Knoxville you can ride along no charge. Airport Service (McGhee Tyson) - depending on traffic 45-75 minutes away. I can take up to 4 people with luggage for $60.00 one way. There are several airport limo or taxi services.

Museums, Movies, Etc.

Be sure to check out free days at all local attractions. Most places (including restaurants) off discounts for military, students, and seniors. Some don't advertise so ask.

Grocery

Aldi's is the best place for low price groceries. Large chains-Kroger, Food City, Wal-Mart, and IGA are available as well.

Unpredictable Weather

Oak Ridge is one of the place you can say, "If you don't like the weather, wait 5-miuntes." From blazing hot summers to ice and snow in the winter (mild and not common), our weather can be unpredictable. I carry a sweater or lightweight jacket in my car. Rain gear can be helpful. If you are an outdoor enthusiast please note that we can have weather extremes and prepare accordingly. This is not a fashion forward city, most people dress casually to dinner, the movies, and sightseeing. Check the local forecast and note that the Smoky Mountains are cooler.

Child Friendly City

There are a lot of outdoor playgrounds. All restaurants will have a highchair and booster seats. Most have a children's menu. See places of interest for kid-friendly activities. The local movie theater always has a children's choice. The local library has a nice children's library and usually (prior to covid) offers free programs.
Bräuche und Kultur

Southerners

Southerners are a friendly lot. You may not understand some of the locals, especially those that come from the nearby Appalachians. For example, "Youins come on down and sit a spell. Ya'll....weins will hoot and holler." Just ask us to repeat ourselves or to say things a different way. You will never get lost, almost anyone will stop and help you find your way. Southern hospitality is a real thing and can be a bit much if you aren't used to it. Most locals expect eye contact. Hugs and a handshake are common. We don't kiss in public.

Melton Lake

The stretch of walkways along the river is magical. In the morning, mist hangs low and as the sun burns it off it can be otherworldly. There are paved walkways along the road and further along, a short stretch of paved walkways that lead to wooded trails.

Wildlife

Deer - Driving - If you are not familiar with deer please be careful. I suggest following the locally posted speed limits for safety. Oak Ridge has had an explosion of deer. They are most active at dawn and dusk. Bear - We get the occasional smaller male bear in our woods. They typically avoid people so it is unusual to see one. Geese - They are all over town. While they are beautiful, they can bite and become aggressive when they have young. Birds - A wonderful variety of year round birds and migratory birds. There are plenty of clubs / interest groups that welcome visitors.
