2 miles from our home is the Fort Fisher State Historic site. Home of the largest amphibious battle in the Civil War, a walk around the fort is a great way to experience local history. Admission and parking are free.

Across from the Fort Fisher Historic site is the recreation area. The unique trees make a great spot for a picnic and the rocks are always a fun place to explore. Just south of the rocks was one of the best surfing breaks in the area growing up, the Cove. The pointbreak-like wave is practically gone, but it is still a beautiful area to visit.

Just south of the rocks was one of the best surfing breaks in the area growing up, the Cove. The pointbreak-like wave is practically gone, but it is still a beautiful area to visit.

Tip for parents: when the kids get cranky from a day in the sun, a quick ride on the golf cart works like a charm to cheer them up :)
