Seen from the sea, Positano is set in a dramatic vertical panorama of colors; the green of the Monti Lattari, the white, pink, and yellow of the Mediterranean houses; the silvery grey of its pebble beaches; and the blue of the sea.

The Emerald Grotto just outside Amalfi is one of the natural highlights along the Amalfi Coast, a blend of dazzling beauty and historic legend. Set in the village of Conca dei Marini just a few kilometers outside the bustling town of Amalfi, this small karst cave was formed naturally over the millennia and gradually filled with seawater. When sunlight filters through the turquoise waves of the Mediterranean into the grotto through underwater openings, the light becomes tinged with a magical emerald color that sends sparkling reflections up the cave walls.

The Sentiero degli Dei links the tiny hilltop town of Agerola with Nocelle, a fraction of Positano nestled on the slopes of Monte Peruso. The name of the footpath, The Path of the Gods, is an indication of the spectacular scenery enroute. Ideally, walkers should walk from Agerola to Nocelle, and not vice-versa; the route runs gently downhill from this direction, with magnificent views of the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri.

Capri is beautiful – seriously beautiful. There’s barely a grubby building or untended garden to blemish the splendour. Steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea; elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillea; even the trees seem to be carefully manicured.

It's the closest you'll get to time travel. When you visit Pompeii it's like going back in time: the town (along with the bodies of its inhabitants) was preserved so well because it was buried quickly by volcanic ash. ... In fact, legend has it that there wasn't even a word for volcano before the eruption.

There’s nothing like wandering around the city center and hearing only Italian being spoken. This type of travel may not be for everyone, but if you are hoping to understand how real Italian people live, this is the perfect city to experience that. Plus, prices aren’t as touristy, they’re local, meaning it’s a cheap spot to visit. As my Italian nonna always preaches: “Rome is the heart of Italy, but Naples is the soul of Italy.”

The volcanic outcrop of Ischia is the most developed and largest of the islands in the Bay of Naples. An early colony of Magna Graecia, first settled in the 8th century BC, Ischia today is famed for its thermal spas, manicured gardens, striking Aragonese castle and unshowy, straightforward Italian airs – a feature also reflected in its food.
