Drinks & Nightlife

Three words are synonymous with Little Nan’s: ‘kitsch’ and ‘Pat Butcher’. The remit has always been fun, gaudy venues whose menus are stuffed full of cut-out photos of ex-‘EastEnders’ cast members. That and cocktails that look like the kind of thing you’d order on a package holiday in Marbs. This latest bar – in Catford’s Broadway Theatre – is no different. Walls are lined with ruched red velvet, glass heads wear masquerade masks and palm trees perch amid fairy lights and gold chaises longues. It’s a maximalist riot of tat.

When it comes to finding a good hang-out in Catford, there's not contest, it has to be Catford Constitutional Club. Located down an unassuming alleyway off Catford Broadway, this charming old gentlemen’s club has become the new home of the Catford Bridge Tavern, which burnt down in 2013. There are vaulted ceilings, original parquet floors and the rotating selection of ciders and beers is sourced from all over the country. Plus it hosts monthly comedy and film nights, and a Tuesday quiz.

A friendly pizzeria where you'll find dishes to fill you up for under a tenner. A lot of their ingredients are imported from Italy, and just to make you feel that little bit more like you're having the authentic Italian experience, there are kitsch murals of Venice and vineyards on the walls, plus they have live singers on occasion too.

Stumbling through the Gantry is something of an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ experience. First, you discover that what appears to be a tiny scruffy bar serving some interesting beers, ciders, cocktails and good coffees. Walk down the narrow staircase and there’s an elegant panelled dining room painted a tasteful shade of National Trust sludge, with ceramic tiled floors and flower-filled glass jugs. Then, further down a quaintly furnished corridor, you enter yet another world: a charming and rustic conservatory overlooking a garden.
