Hiking in Acadia

One of the most popular trails in Acadia, and for good reason. I highly recommend you arrive as early as you can to avoid crowds. Stunning views of the coast & Sand Beach. It’s a short 1.5 loop trail, but note that if you are afraid of heights this hike may not be for you. There is also climbing involved and is not a dog friendly trail.

Very popular mountain, so get there EARLY! You can either hike to the top and back, do the 2.6 mile loop and come back on the Man O’ War Trail, or hike my personal favorite; the 4.5 mile loop trail that takes you to Saint Sauveur Mountain & Valley Peak. This trail does involve a bit of rock scrambling. Dog friendly.

If I had to choose a favorite trail in the park, this would be it. However, it’s typically closed from April to July due to peregrine falcon nesting, so check the park’s website before going. This is a 2.1 loop trail, and not for the faint of heart (or those with a fear of heights). It’s part hike and part climb, and is incredibly exhilarating for those who are feeling adventurous. This hike takes you to the summit of Champlain Mountain and offers some of the most beautiful views in the park. Get there EARLY to avoid crowds. If the trail is not open I recommend taking the 2.1 mile out and back Beechcroft Path Trail so you can still enjoy the views from the top. That trail is dog friendly, but the Precipice Trail is NOT.

I love this mountain because there are many connecting trails and different ways to hike it. The Beech Mountain trail is a 1.2 mile loop and leads to a fire tower at the top. Also in this area is the Beech Cliff loop trail which is very quick and easy but has beautiful views of Echo Lake and Echo Lake Beach at the top. Dog friendly.

This is a fun, easy hike that takes you to both North and South Bubble overlooking Jordan Pond. It’s very popular so get there early as the parking lot is small and fills up quickly. 1.6 miles round trip, dog friendly. If you’re looking for a longer hike, you can continue the trail from North Bubble to Connor’s Nubble, or hike one of the connecting trails to Jordan Pond and hike to Pemetic, Sargent, or Penobscot Mountain (all have amazing peaks!)

Sightseeing

The Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia is actually located on the mainland in Winter Harbor. Schoodic Point is an incredible scenic area along the rocky coast and is a great place to watch the waves crash against the shore. This part of the park is generally more quiet than Mount Desert Island.

One of the most popular destinations in Acadia (especially at sunrise), Cadillac stands as the parks’ highest peak. The 3 mile scenic drive to the top requires a $6 vehicle reservation online through Recreation.gov. There are restrooms, a gift shop, and stunning overlooks at the summit. You can also hike one of the four strenuous, but rewarding, trails to the top.
