Amish culture and lift style tour

Experience the history of the Amish & Mennonites A different kind of attraction... A 10 foot by 265-foot circular mural, called Behalt. Since the beginning of the Reformation in the early 1500s, the people who later came to be known as Amish and Mennonites have been a puzzle to the rest of the world. Who were these people who upset the European religious community, both Catholic and Protestant, by teaching about adult baptism? Why, in the face of trials and persecution, did they choose non-violence as a response? A unique educational experience awaits you at the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center. Witness the history of the Amish, Mennonites, and Hutterites on Behalt - one of four cycloramas in North America. Behalt is a 10 foot by 265-foot circular mural. The painted oil-on-canvas cyclorama uses unique artistic techniques of line and color to illustrate multiple stories within a vast timeline. The name Behalt, means "to keep, hold, remember." Experience the martyrs' final moments. It is astonishing to find that the history of the Amish and Mennonites - known as "the gentle people" and "the quiet in the land" - is laced with persecution and martyrdom. Struggling to live out their beliefs in a peaceful manner, they were forced to migrate across Europe, some into Russia, and across the Atlantic to North America. Through the mural you will come to a deeper understanding of the precepts that formed their beliefs and led to a quest for a simple, peaceful lifestyle.

Yoder’s Amish Home was purchased in 1972 by Eli and Gloria Yoder. Somewhat unsure of what to do with the badly run-down farm which had been rented out to Amish families for 10 years, Eli and Gloria decided to do what they had in the back of their minds all along. After extensive repairs (the little house was being used as a chicken coop!), Yoder’s Amish Home was opened for visits in 1983. Eli had been part of the Old Order Amish faith until the age of 21. Gloria was raised “English” in an Amish community, having gone to a mostly Amish school until the 5th grade, and lived just about 1/2 mile from Eli. With both of their heritages rooted in this culture and community, they thought it would be a great idea to share this unique culture with visitors from all over the world. For the past 30-plus years, Yoder’s Amish Home has been striving to give visitors an inside look at our culture and people. Stop in and visit—we are glad to host you!

"Boyd & Wurthmann story started in the 1930's as a grocery. We still serve a 99¢ cup of coffee and is one of the oldest established businesses in Berlin, Ohio. The restaurant was a gathering place for locals to catch up on the latest news over a cup of coffee, while trying the daily special or a homemade pie. Since its beginnings, Boyds has continued to draw crowds of both locals and visitors with the promise of not only mouth-watering pie, but also a fascinating history. Boyd's is blessed to have the opportunity to serve the 4 million tourists that travel through every year. Our Amish cooks do a great job of making home-style specials daily, and a variety of homemade pies. We are committed to bringing our customers the best of home cooking"
