Sightseeing

Such a fun place to hike and of course see a volcano! Kīlauea Iki trail has three different distance and difficulty options. (See their website for details and possible closures) Our favorite is the loop from the Kilauea Overlook / Trailhead that descends through a lush rainforest to the solidified lava lake on the floor of Kīlauea Iki crater. The valley floor is a harsh dry landscape and so different from the rainforest. It’s a steep and rocky, descent and then ascent 400 feet (122 m) but such an incredible experience. Along with the hiking basics make sure to take sunscreen and plenty of water.

****Please look online to see if this is open. They have to close it for repairs. This is a fun Lava tube to go see. Make sure you have a headlamp for EVERYONE that is going to see the lava tube. There is only natural light for the first about the first 50 feet.

Hawaii Nautical Whale Watching Tour

Spend the day in Waikoloa and go on a whale watching catamaran. We like to go to the beach before or after the boat ride. You can rent a SUP or just have fun laying on the beach and going in the ocean. There are also a few restaurants in the area. *The best close up whale watching is in Maui but this is a fun way to see them without the expense of flying to Maui for the day.
