Römerberg is the historical focal point of the city, a cobbled plaza lined with original and reconstructed half-timber medieval buildings including the Römer (Frankfurt’s town hall) and the Alte Nikolaikirche (St Nicholas’ Church), which you can visit if there are no meetings or events on. There’s a striking contrast with the shiny skyscrapers behind.

The original Opera House was finished in 1880, but the grand building you see today was reconstructed and inaugurated in 1981 after the old building was destroyed in the war. The new structure boasts an ultra-modern mahogany-panelled concert hall, where you can catch one of the 300 shows they put on a year. The venue no longer stages full operas, but arias and duets are performed regularly, and other concerts span jazz, symphony orchestras, chamber philharmonics, pianists and cellists, and so on. The Alte Oper, as it’s called in German, is the centrepiece of a scenic square with a large fountain and ornate lamp posts. The square makes the perfect spot for a break or quick meet-up; from here, walk down the Große Bockenheimer Straße, a pedestrian shopping street with a number of high-end shops and cafés.

Frankfurt's beloved, purpose-built indoor market, Kleinmarkthalle, has been running in the same spot since the late-nineteenth century. It had to be rebuilt after bombing in World War II, but continues to attract thousands of visitors every week (Mon-Sat). Over 60 traders sell everything from pretty blooms to secondhand books via fresh produce, dairy delights and wine. On Saturdays, the place is crowded with people enjoying a glass of wine outside the market building.

To sample all the regional specialities Hesse has to offer in one spot (and on the cheap), head to Erzeugermarkt Konstablerwache, the state’s largest farmers’ market. Cured meat, hearty German brown bread, and assorted cheeses provide excellent sandwiches, and you can wash it all down with apple wine. The market features stalls from more than 50 of the region’s farm collectives, and many of the artisanal goods are organic. Opening hours: Thu 10am-8pm; Sat 8am-5pm
