In the Nin lagoon, very rare habitats formed: a low muddy and sandy sea shores with marshy areas containing the distinctive flora and fauna and sand dunes with rare plants. Professionals recognise the ecological value of the Nin habitats so the plant and animal communities are strictly protected and listed as important habitats in the natural ecological network. The preservation of nature is carried out according to the criteria of the world's largest coordinated network protection areas, NATURA 2000. Rare and endemic plants as well as birds (over 250 species live here) and other wildlife tell a fascinating story of adaptation and preservation in a very salty environment.

Right next to the cruiser landing on the waterfront with the most beautiful sunset in the world (this was actually written by Alfred Hitchcock when he visited Zadar in 1964), the wind and waves hold a never ending concert. The device was made by architect Nikola Bašić and is in fact an experimental musical instrument, which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps. As soon as it was built, the Sea Organ became magical bait and a cult venue of every itinerary.

Castrum Liube was built in the mediaeval ages and it was the seat of the Templars. The most convincing evidence of Liburns-Illyrian tribe’s culture is nearby Venac gradina, with an especially beautiful view on it from north side of Rtina. Near the castle ruins, on the site of Dvorne, a large number of graves were found, at the surface, but also by the entire hill, and the bigger ones are easier to see at first sight (90 meters altitude!). Those are grave mounds-tumuli- and the largest one is Križarska glavica, closer to Stojići. Unfortunately all plundered in the 70's by local farmer. Small number of exponents found their place in Archeological museum of Zadar.

Unchanged since the 9th century and the time of the early Croatian medieval state, it was named the smallest cathedral in the world by the known English architect, Thomas Jackson. On the first day of summer (solstice), a Festival of Sun and Light takes place in it penetrating into the secret knowledge of its ancient builders who built this church in order to serve as a sundial and a calendar (each side of the church has an oval opening and its construction and position is in relation to the position of the Sun throughout the year – winter and summer solstice; spring and fall equinox).

A recognisable symbol of Nin is the Church of St Nicholas, located in the field of Prahulje, it is very important for the rulers of the Croatian dynasty and for the history of Croatia and Nin. According to tradition, seven Kings were crowned in Nin, and every crowned ruler rode on horseback to the Church of Saint Nicholas, and it was in fact here that he would be presented to the people by the same symbolic ritual-on that mound he would cut with a sword the four corners of the world.

The Mainland Gate was erected in the Renaissance style in 1543, according to the designs of Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli, in the shape of a triumphal arch with three entrances. At the time they were the main entrance to the city. A wooden bridge on stone posts lead from the Land Gate to the Customs´ Gate (now part of a well-known fish restaurant Foša in the port). The middle arch of the Land Gate bears a sculpted image of a mounted St. Krševan (the coat of arms of the City of Zadar), and a monumental lion of St. Mark above it (the coat of arms of the Venetian Republic).

The Square is located on a site between the medieval City Walls and the Renaissance bastion Grimani, where the oldest park in Croatia is located (founded by Austrian commander Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden in 1829, a passionate botanist and admirer of Dalmatian flora). During the 16th century, the Venetians helped the city withstand Turkish sieges by building a large water cistern with five ornamental wellheads, giving the square its name. The pentagonal Captain´s tower leaning against the City Walls with the cornice is the only one left from ten similar towers located on the margins of the medieval city.

This unique Church of St. Donatus was originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity (9th century) and only later, in the 15th century it was named after Bishop Donatus from Zadar who had started the building of the church. Its unusual cylindrical shape with double interior space is connected in shape to the baptistery of Charles the Great or the Church of St. Vitale in Ravenna. Today, it is the symbol of Zadar holding the remains of the Roman Forum in its foundations. Due to its extraordinary acoustic characteristics, St. Donatus (and Forum itself) is the stage of festival named Musical Evenings in St. Donatus, held every year in July and August.
