Fiskmarkaðurinn (also known as Fish Market) is an upscale restaurant with a small bar specifically for sushi. The mixed sashimi plates and maki rolls with Arctic char or soft-shell crab are second-to-none. With bar seating, Fish Market has the best dining experience for people who enjoy chatting with the sushi chefs as they work and getting tips for the best fish to order on any given day. They also have an amazing wasabi cocktail to complement your meal.

Sushi Social serves the South American spin on sushi, adding lots of lime flavours, chilli and sauces. The lighting is low and the seating is intimate, so we recommend it for a date night. Not that anyone in Iceland actually goes on dates.

The Geysir stores have become a well-known Icelandic brand through their lush imagery, tight branding and sumptuous store interiors. They launched their own clothing line in 2015, with new lookbooks each year since, so if you want that dreamy halcyon look that combines tradition Icelandic elements with a contemporary edge, you know where to go.

Getting Around

Taxis in Iceland don’t look like anything in particular. They are not all yellow like in New York or black and oddly shaped like in London. In Iceland you don’t hail a cab, you call for one. If you are downtown, there are also a few taxi stands where the cabs wait in line for the next tour and you can also get one from there. There are two major taxi companies in Iceland, Hreyfill Bæjarleiðir and BSR, and a few smaller ones that I personally never use. The number for Hreyfill is +354-588-5522 and BSR +354-561-0000.

All visitors to Iceland MUST try the famous warm-water pools. In Hafnarfjörður, like other parts of the country, pools are extraordinarily popular and well frequented. Neighbours congregate in the ‘hot pots' (hot tubs), which are favoured meeting spots for discussing politics and current events. Suðurbæjarlaug offers both indoor and outdoor pools as well as recreational facilities. In the swimming areas, there's a 25-m (82-foot) outdoor pool, a 12.5-m (41-foot) indoor pool, hot pots, a steam bath, and a water slide. The recreational areas offer a solarium, massage, and a Nautilus gym. Address: Hringbraut 77, Tel: 565 3080. Open Mon to Fri 06:30 - 21.00, Sat 8:00 - 18:00, Sun 8:00 - 17:00.

Parks & Nature

One really nice hiking trail close to Reykjavik is at Mount Esja. Mount Esja is often called the “city-mountain” and dominates the skyline to the north of Reykjavik. Mount Esja is a actually a synonym for a large mountain range. But we are going to stick with the most popular hiking trail which leads from a place called Mógilsá which is about a twenty minute drive from Reykjavik. It has a big parking lot, a really nice café, and a trail leading up to the top of Esja. If you go right the path is a bit longer but not as steep. It is rocky at times and due to gravel it can be slippery if you are on the way down. So be careful. The two paths converge at large stone marker called “Steinn” which

Tucked away on a quiet street in Hafnarfjörður is the enchanting Hellisgerði Park. A pathway twists beside the lovely pond and through the lava rocks that buckle and fold into tiny caves and mysterious nooks. Draped in emerald and olive-coloured moss or covered in a wash of white snow, the rocks and the stories of this park are captivating. This magical place is known for its huldufólk (hidden people: elves, dwarves and other mystical creatures). There are two tours available: The Elf Walk Tour which focuses on the sincere spiritualit and belief system associated with huldufólk and The Hidden Worlds tour which focuses primarily on the colourful history and folklore associated with huldufólk.

A comfortable two-kilometre walking path circles the small tranquil lake where many Icelanders come to fish in the warmer months. Trails also lead away from the water toward the hills, looping their way through the hushed forest and mossy undergrowth. From breaks in the treeline it's possible to catch sight of the cone-shaped Keilir Mountain in the distance. Also tucked along the paths are a memorial grove, a scouting centre, and of course, dozens of pleasant spots where one can stop to rest and to gather serene memories.
