Beautiful winding road in a canyon gorge created by the Feather River. Great Salmon and trout fishing in season and beautiful views.

The Feather River Byway is the lowest Sierra Nevada crossing. Railroad and seven powerhouses line this magnificent river canyon. During the rains, one can spot over 100 waterfalls. Be sure you have plenty of gas and drinking water, you don't want to get stuck on this long stretch of highway. From here head left up the highway for 11 minutes (6.4 miles) to cross the Pulga Bridge, the steel arch bridge located about 30 miles north of Oroville is one of the wonders of construction on this breathtaking drive. The 680 foot long structure is 200 feet above the river and 170 feet above the Western Pacific Railroad bridge below. The bridge is unique in that it not only curves as it crosses the river, but is also banked, creating a span that both curves and twists at about a five-degree angle. Recently, it was used in a Honda commercial. Sandy Beach is another minute up the highway (7.3 mi.) a great swim spot. But there's a trick. When you see Cal Trans station (a few buildings on the right) pull into the space to the left. Turn back down the highway to access the dirt road down to the river bank. This is a popular spot and often busy. At 17 minutes, assuming you didn't stop, (12.1 mi.) you will see the rest stop on the left. Just across the highway is a service road you can walk up. There is a creek along the road ad you'll see a little waterfall. Do not be fooled. Keep going maybe 10 minutes up unless you are in pretty good shape. There is a bigger waterfall. There is the (locked) opening to a mine as well. Grizzley Dome 19 min up (14.1 miles) is a favorite rock climbing spot, the outiside of the tunnel, parking for just a few cars is to the right. Besides climbing, the creek offers some beautiful spots to dip and climb though a cave as long as you don't mind walking through the creek as there is no real trail. This can be a challenge for some, which makes is more pristine for the rest of us. Getting back on the hiighway, Grizzly Dome is the longest of the three tunnels at 1,187 feet has viewing windows on the north side. Rock Creek bridge is at 16.5 miles, 22 min. I know people who have jumped off that bridge and swam to tell about it. I don't recommend it, but if you park on the left after the bridge, there is a lovely open area to swim or paddle around. Also plenty of shade beneath the bridge. Further up the dirt road (Tobin Ridge Road) are several spots to park and explore waterfalls and wide expanses of rock for picnics and relaxing, bouldering, etc. If you follow the road, watch for the switch back that goes up at an amazing angle. If your car can make it, woohoo! If not, it's worth the hike to see some lovely areas water falls over boulders. A little more private although there are trails. Storrie, while not a stop, is owned by some friends who collect airstream trailers. Look left at mile 18.8, 26 min. Just past Tobin Resort, there is a pull out to the left, hike down the trail for a tiny beach among huge boulders. The water is swift, but it's a beautiful spot to most likely be alone. Just past that, at 30 minutes (20.6 miles) is the spot where the train trestle passes over the highway. It is an amazing photo opportunity. It looks like the bridges cross. Close, but not quiite. Belden Town has a rest stop to the left with a stamp mill to explore. At 37 minutes, 28.5 miiles, you have a little resort with a restaurant/bar/festival venue. Even if it's not your destination, it's fun to drive over the bridge, stop in and check out the little market inside the building. Say hi from Rock House for us. Since there is a hiighway traffic stop, this is a good place to turn back, unless you want more... Caribou Crossroads is just up the highway at 30.2 mile mark. This little cafe is a fun place to stop. Tell Chris hi for us if you do. After that, there is Indian Falls on the 89 1hr, 3 min, 49.3 mi. Great place to stretch your legs and walk down a well maintained trail to a lovely, shorter waterfall with a nice swim spot. This one is more maintained and touristy with signs and all, but we do stop every time we go by. Tayorsville iis the cutest cowboy town with Independence Day parade and rodeo. We have camped there near the creek every year. There are about 2 businesses in the town and a huge campground just outside town. The best wading/get wet spot is under the bridge. Follow the sign at 52.5 miles turning right, and drive 5 miles to town. The campground is to the other side of town to the right of the rodeo grounds. From here there are a few lakes up in the mountains. Just let us know if you want to go further, or ask at the tavern, everyone has a favorite spot.
