"Trullo" probably comes from the Greek “tholos” dome, or from the Latin “trullum” tower. The thick dry stone walling and conical roofs are remarkable examples of prehistoric building techniques. Similar buildings are found in Turkey, Greece and Africa. The trulli, originally built by peasants farmers with stones taken from the fields to allow agriculture, were grouped in Contrada or family areas. With bread ovens & indoor fires the families could sleep in shelter, cool from the heat of the summer sun and warm in winter.
