This lively temple once served as the palace of Ning Jin, the last king of the Ming dynasty. Head to the back of the temple to see the 300-year-old Mazu statue, the shrine to Mazu's parents is in what used to be the king's bedroom.

大天后宮配合地勢，建築由前往級級升高，典麗宏偉；尤其拜殿擁有台灣最高大的捲棚式屋架，配上重簷歇山的屋頂，比例優美，曲線昂揚，實為廟宇建築的佳購。 大天后宮的建築細部，如石刻、木雕、彩繪等，也相當可觀；豐富的歷史文物，舉凡區聯法器、神像雕塑、石刻木作、書法彩繪，無一步賞心悅目，稱上是集民間藝術之大成。殿內大批壁畫彩繪，多出自府城彩繪名家陳玉峰之手，穿梭直間，猶如置身藝術殿堂。

大天后宮，主祀媽祖的廟宇，此外也是國定古蹟。該廟宇原址本為明朝寧靖王朱術桂所居住的寧靖王府邸，之後轉變成媽祖廟。該廟是全臺最早由官方興建且列入官方祀典的媽祖廟，其在臺灣府城也有重要地位。
